Faux Leather Leggings + Currently

|
Hello and Happy New Year! It's kind of hard to believe it's the year 2020! That number just sounds so futuristic to me but time marches on so here we are. I reflected on the past year in Monday's post but today it's back to business as usual. It's the first Wednesday of the month, so as always I'm sharing some outfit chit chat along with what's "Currently" happening around here. On the outfit front, let's talk faux leather leggings! I got mine at Express a few years back and wore them a lot when they were new...then didn't reach for them at all the past two winters. But I'm glad I held on to them, because with the cooler weather we've been having lately I've been in the mood to wear them again!

There's only one difference between these two outfits, and that's the jacket. I wanted to share this look with a dressier and more casual spin, and in this case the completer piece made that an easy change.  I wore this outfit with the grey moto jacket for date night, and I have to say it was so nice to be wearing really comfortable pants all night but still be somewhat dressed up! I added a link for a similar, very affordable option for my leggings (with thousands of amazing reviews!) since the sizes are limited on my exact pair, but I think that may be due just to the holiday sales. These have been a staple at Express for awhile so my guess is that they will eventually be re-stocked.

One of the reasons I held off from wearing these leggings for awhile is that whenever I wear them, I do feel like they're "a lot of look," as the saying goes. They dress up an outfit more than regular leggings and even more than black jeans in my opinion. That's not a bad thing by any means, but it makes me feel over-the-top dressed up for most of my casual everyday activities. That meant these needed to be dressy pants/date night pants for me, yet all of the tops I have that are long enough for leggings are just too casual for date night! I realized that to get more use out of these leggings, I needed a slightly dressier tunic top/longer top option. When I found this top at White House Black Market I knew it was the missing puzzle piece! The material is thicker and nicer than a t-shirt, yet still  super soft, and the length is perfect for leggings. It also comes in grey (see it here), and I ordered that one too for more mix and match options. I'll be sharing a few ways to wear that one on Friday.

While I do think these will get more use for me as date night pants now, I still think they work dressy-casual daytime events too.  I wanted to give this top + pants combo a "brunch with friends" vibe for a daytime example here. Initially I tried a few different cardigan options to complete the look, but the proportions didn't work for those at all since my cardigans are all mid-thigh to knee length. That sent me back to the jacket department, and my denim jacket was my best option for a casual vibe, and just the right length!

That does it for the outfit details today, but it's the first Wednesday of the month which means  I'm joining Anne to share a few lifestyle tidbits for her "Currently" link up. She provides the creative prompts for this, and today's participants are sharing what we're currently resolving, reading, cleaning, creating, and planning. I'm also joining Kristen for "What's New" since I find the topics overlap pretty well!

Resolving...to be the best mother, daughter, sister, and wife that I can be. The older I get, the more I appreciate how much my family is there for me year after year when friends come and go. So I want to make sure they all know how much they mean to me!

Reading...Sequels! The Shadows We Hide by Allen Eskens. This is a sequel to his book The Life We Bury, though you don't need to read that to understand this. (But you should read that anyway if you haven't!) I'm really enjoying this one and can definitely see myself recommending it to others so far. I'm also listening to The Testaments by Margaret Atwood on audio. It's the sequel to a Handmaid's Tale, and in this case there's not much point reading the second if you haven't read the first. My feelings are mixed on that one right now so I don't want to say much more about it until I finish.

Cleaning...up the disaster that Christmas left behind. It's not just the boxes and wrapping paper, but some of the gifts my boys wanted (e.g. a tool bench for the garage) required quite a bit of re-organizing and cleaning out of other stuff to make room for it. I'm really glad I took Thursday and Friday off from work last week because I needed the time to get things around the house to a less-disastrous level.

Creating...my annual family photo book on Shutterfly. I try to keep it up throughout the year so I don't get overwhelmed when January rolls around...but I did fall behind this year and haven't updated since August. Once I finish my current Kindle book I'm not going to let myself do any evening reading until I get caught up on photos!

Planning...Trips and activities for Spring Break and Summer Break. It blows my mind that we have to do this straight after the holidays, but we've learned the hard way that waiting too long can mean missing out on what we really want to do or paying a lot more for it.

Thanks for stopping by today! I hope 2020 gets off to a great start for you and I'll see you back on Friday!

  4. Man, it is so easy to fall behind on the yearly Shutterfly album... I intended to work on it quarterly last year and it just didn't happen. Not letting yourself start a new book to read until it's done is harsh but effective I'm sure ;-) Happy 2020!
