Friday Favorites 9/27/18

It's another Friday and time for another round of loosely-interpreted "favorites" here! I'm getting into a little bit of a flow with the format of these posts to give them some variety so I hope you find a favorite or two that sparks your interest today! Let's get started with a couple of favorite outfits I wore this week.

1. Dressy Casual Sweater Tank
JoLynne shared this top a few weeks back and I thought it looked like a perfect summer-to-faux-fall transition piece for SoCal. So I gave it a shot because it had free shipping with ShopRunner and was reasonably priced at $33:

I've been trying to add a few tops to my wardrobe that have a little something "extra" beyond a basic tee or tank so I can wear them on their own without needing a layer, and this fit the bill. It has a nice metallic gold shimmer to it in person, but sadly my pictures didn't capture that so you'll just have to take my word for it! It's fun to wear in the sunshine for daytime and the metallic hint gives it a little bit of a dressier vibe so I can wear it for date night too. I usually wear a Small or XS in tops and and I took an XS in this since it has a fairly relaxed fit. I also had to add my lip color in this shot to give it a pop of color! I used Plum Pretty Lipsense all over the lip then Sheer Berry as a liner.

2. Rust Henley + Striped Cardigan
This rust henley tank was a summer favorite, and it looks like it's going to be a fall favorite too!

You've seen this tank on the blog here and here, but this was my attempt to give it a SoCal Fall spin. Just adding ankle boots instead of sandals is the easiest way for me to do that. The cardigan is optional for daytime, but it's becoming essential when the sun goes down...earlier and earlier each day here it seems!

3. Splurge vs. Save Ankle Boots
I shared this outfit on Monday in my September Amazon Try On Session, but I was focused on the top so I didn't get around to talking about my "Save" ankle boots!

I'm really loving pointed toe boots lately and have seen similar styles with a side cut-out from Vince Camuto and Steve Madden, but those styles are $150 and I was on the hunt for something under $100. This pair from Report is $66 for the taupe color and under $50 for tan! This color is "Taupe" but they definitely have a lot of grey in them. Here's a closer look at them with a side view so you can see the split shaft detail + heel height:

I took my normal size in these, but if you're between sizes go with the smaller size. For reference to the "original" styles, here's a little Splurge vs. Save view:
SPLURGE: Steve Madden $150 | Vince Camuto $150
SAVE: Tan $48 | Four $66

Quite honestly, I really do love the "nude" look and clean styling of the Splurge versions. But...for a savings of $100 I'm telling myself that these will do the job just find for my needs. (For now!)

4. Flashback Friday
This week I'm trying something new with my Flashback Friday segment- it's called planning ahead! Haha! Usually with this segment I share a past outfit I plan to repeat, but this week I went a step further. I'm sharing the past outfit and the way I actually repeated it in real life. This really helps me shop my closet and makes getting dresses a little easier at least one day per week! First I'll start with a rewind. Here's the outfit I shared last Friday that I planned to repeat:

That outfit was from 2017, but I still had some exact and similar pieces in my closet, so here's how I re-created it last week:

The only difference is the jacket and the fact that I'm not carrying a bag. Lately I've been opting not to put my bags into my top view photos as often just because it makes my life a little easier when it comes to linking my outfits, especially once something sells out. Plus, I find that most women are particular about their bags and need them more for function than outfit styling, so whatever bag I'm carrying/linking is usually not a key item of interest for readers here.

Now for this week's Flashback outfit! I also wore this next outfit in 2017:
Similar Plaid Shirt | Similar Jeans | Similar Necklace | Similar Bag | Similar Boots | Similar Bracelet

It's too hot for jeans and boots here but I still thought I could make this work with shorts, so here's what I did:

In have to admit I have owned too many plaid shirts over the years, and obviously some that were very similar to each other. These are the kinds of shopping mistakes I'm trying to avoid going forward! The 2017 plaid shirt (in the first outfit with jeans) was from Old Navy and the one just above was from Express. Both are sold out now, but this Abercrombie option in "White Check" is what I would get if I were shopping for a similar shirt right now.

Thinking out loud here, but I'm realizing that going forward I may not end up sharing an updated version of my Flashback outfits if they're exact re-creations where I still have all of the same pieces! That's a little too redundant. But when I make enough changes to an outfit to make it work for the season or with current products, I'll keep sharing.

5. Fitness
I'm bringing back a little bit of Fitness content here by highlighting a favorite workout of the week as part of my Friday Favorites. If you're newer here, you can head to my All Things Fitness Reference Post for a complete guide of all of my past fitness content. I do all of my workouts at home, so that means I'm highlighting workouts you can purchase and do yourself if you're interested. This week for weight training I did these three workouts from Cathe's Ripped with Hiit series.

These workouts come as part of Cathe's Ripped with Hiit series with nine workouts total. I really do like the whole series but the three above are my favorites and really great weight training workouts. I think these would be good for someone new to working out at home because you don't need a ton of equipment compared to other workouts: just several sets of dumbbells, a resistance band and a step/bench. Cathe uses a Barbell in some exercises but I don't have a barbell myself . I always substitute with dumbbells for those exercises and it's still a very effective workout.

I like these because they're fast paced and make me feel like I accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. There's not a lot of rest in between sets so you're really moving. Each workout is 40-50 minutes and they are thorough! A word of warning: the Legs workout does alternate weights with plyometric moves so if you have bad knees you may want to skip this entirely or plan on doing a lot of modifying.

And that's a wrap on this week's favorites! See you all back here on Monday!

Linking up with ErikaAndrea, and Narci for Friday Favorites

  1. I am just loving your Friday Favorites. Flashback Friday is brilliant and a little fitness incorporated I love. I also adore that rust Henley. May you have a super sweet weekend!!

  2. I like the idea of looking back and rewearing something you've worn before! :) I always like looking back through the blog when I'm putting a post together for other ways I've worn things in the past - sometimes it gives me an idea for next time I'm wearing the piece!

Hope that you have had a good week and have a nice weekend ahead of you :)

  4. I love that sweater tank! I am a tank/tee person - so I am with you on sometimes needing to "up my game" with tops. I actually like the style of the "save" booties more but I am with you on the look of beige booties. I hope you have a great weekend!
