Denim Skirt + Friday Favorites

Today's post could alternately be titled "What I Wore to the Movies in Summer" since that was the entire purpose of this outfit. It's been ages since I last went to the movies. In fact I think the last one I saw in a theater was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which came out in 2017. I took my kids and their friends to see that and ended up liking it just as much as they did! Then earlier this month my husband was traveling for work and I wanted a beat-the-heat activity with the kids so another movie seemed like a good plan. Kellyann had just recommended Yesterday as a good multi-generational option, so that's what we watched and we all enjoyed it. Of course, we had to listen to Beatles songs for the next few days afterwards!

Thanks to Amazon for providing my denim skirt in this post and thanks to Shopbop for my handbag and sandals!

I thought my denim skirt would be a good choice since lengthwise it's between shorts and pants. That way I wouldn't be too hot outside with pants or too cold inside with shorts. I also brought a cardigan because I suspected the A/C would be full blast in the theater and I was right! I would have been cold without it so I was glad to have it.

All of the pieces in today's outfit are repeats, but I'll give you a quick rundown on the sizing. First, my exact cardigan is from Abercrombie a couple of years back, but they do have a very similar version right now. Their pieces generally run true to size for me - no need to size up or down! I'm wearing a Small in this henley tank, which is normal for me in fitted tops like this. And this denim skirt also runs true to size.

Here's a look at both ways I've worn this exact denim skirt. For more denim skirt outfit ideas check out this post from May. It's a fairly recent post so I didn't want to repeat all of the outfits here just yet. Maybe next Spring when I've had another year to style this a few more ways!

Time to join up with some blogger friends for Friday Favorites!

1. Fancy Movie Theatres: Since I don't go out to the movies often, I'm kind of behind the times on what they have to offer these days. I've heard of theaters that have fancy chairs and serve full dinners and drinks etc., but I'd never been to one until this month! If you're local (or have one in your area), we went to Angelika Film Center and it was so nice! I was able to reserve our seats online so we didn't have to get there half an hour early to ensure good seating. On top of that, the chairs were really comfortable, padded recliners. We had just eaten lunch beforehand so we didn't end up ordering food or drinks, but it looked and smelled like they had good options from what I saw other people having. The things that really sold me on the experience were the convenience of reserving seats and the comfort of the seats themselves, though. Since we don't go to the movies very often, I'm willing to pay a few bucks extra when we do go to have those perks! Anyway, I'm probably the last to try this type of theater but if you haven't yet or avoid the movies because of the crowds, this was definitely an improved experience!

2. Catan: On the subject of family activities, we introduced our boys (they're middle school age, BTW), to Catan recently and we had a lot of fun playing it as a family! My husband and I used to play this with our friends in college, back when it was called Settlers of Catan, but I haven't played it since my kids were born! I couldn't remember any of the rules at all, so it was pretty slow getting started and a little confusing at first. I thought the instructions could have been organized a bit better, but we muddled through, and once we got going we remembered why we liked it so much back in the day! It was fun to introduce our kids to it and see them get into it! If you haven't tried, it's a fun one for families and group get-togethers.

3. Bronzer Palette: Switching gears to an entirely different topic here, I recently tried this Milani bronzer palette per Noelle's recommendation and I'm really liking it! I've linked it on Amazon but you can also find it in store at Target, CVS, etc. It's pretty affordable (about $10) and is really well pigmented. I have to apply with a pretty light hand, especially if I'm using the darkest shade. I had to go back and update my Go-To Makeup for Photos post to include this since it's now my go-to bronzer palette! I was previously using this ELF bronzer palette, but I do like this Milani palette better. The ELF one was very sheer, so it took a lot of product to get any visible color.

Thanks for spending a few minutes of your day with me and I hope to see you back on Monday!

  1. Cutest movie goer you are! Fabulous and fun outfit. I’ve been wanting that palette but my Target is always out, yay for the link girl. Have the BEST weekend! xo

  2. I am so glad y'all liked the movie! I really could not stop singing Beatles songs for at least a week afterwards. The hem of your denim skirt is what I really like about it as well as the wash. It's a great length on you too.
I have never heard of Catan before! I'll have to tell my husband - we are always looking for games to play with our friends. We usually do card or dice games but it would be nice to have something new and fun!

  3. That skirt is so cute on you and I love the color of your henley top! I can't wait to see Yesterday! I've never heard of Catan and need to check it out for a family game night! Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. I like the denim skirt, I definitely want to add another denim skirt to my wardrobe when the boys are a bit bigger - the one I have at the moment is a maxi skirt, which is what you need with toddlers, haha! :) We are taking the boys out to the movies today actually! it's been about a year since we last went, it's not a regular event for us but it will be nice to go enjoy a movie with them :)

Hope that your weekend is off to a good start :)

  5. I love Milani blushes but haven't tried their bronzers. That palette is so pretty and I like the different shades! The length of your skirt is perfect. It's sometimes hard to find denim skirts that aren't too short or too long.

  6. Such a classic casual combo! My fave has gotta be the 2nd look. Love the simplicity of the outfit.
