Favorite Books + Macbook Giveaway

|
Today I'm joining Erika and Shay for their "Stranded" series where they share which three things from a specific category that they would take if they were stranded on a deserted island. This month the category is books, and I just so happen to have two books that I've been meaning to talk about but haven't found a reason to work them into my content until now.

1. You are a Badass
Via: Amazon

The first time I ever heard about this book was back in February when I read Megan's post. She completely sold me on the book and knew I wanted to read it...eventually. But "eventually" happened sooner than I expected because my friend Erin surprised me with a copy of the book just a couple of weeks later. Erin had no clue that I wanted to read the book, but I took it as a sign from the universe that I needed to read this book immediately.

I'm not sure how best to summarize this book and what it did for me. I just know that a lot of times I am my own worst enemy and hold myself back from achieving goals or even attempting to achieve them because I let feelings of self-doubt and anxiety win out in my mind. The book gave me exactly the kick in the pants I needed to "just do it"in several areas of my life, and if you struggle with the same feelings, you should read it too.

Since reading the book, I've shared it with a few other people and it seems to have the same positive effect on everyone. (e.g. Noelle's experience). The bottom line with this one is you have nothing to lose by reading it and a lot of life quality to gain!

2. Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion
Via: Amazon

My second book choice is Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. In a way, this book left me with a similar, "take charge of your life" feeling as the Badass book. One things that really bothers me in life is when I feel like someone (whether an individual, business, group, etc.) is trying to manipulate me into doing something that isn't necessarily in my best interest. This book opened my eyes to some of the most common techniques humans use to persuade each other. And now that I see them for what they are, I can make more objective decisions about how I want to proceed. It gives me a stronger resolve to not let myself be manipulated. Based on the writing style of this book (lots of explanation of psychological experiments) vs. my first book (conversational tone) I don't think this one will appeal to quite as many people, but I loved it and want to read it again, which is rare for me to say!

* * *

By the way, even though we can choose three books when we're "stranded" I decided I'm only taking two because those were the only two that really stand out to me as books worth sharing.  Normally I try to work a little bit of fashion/outfit content into my posts, but today I'm making an exception because it just didn't fit! So if you came for outfits and made it this far, thanks reading and I hope you'll stop by on Friday for my regularly scheduled outfit and fitness recap!

  5. Sooooo I've never read books that weren't fiction type novels. Ever. Ok, not since high school. But I guess I read Mindy's and Tina Fey's books but neither fall into this motivational/therapeutical type category. You and Noelle have my interest piqued on the Badass book though. Sounds like advice I need to hear and pound into my brain. Glad you were able to make it through your dance! Wish I could have seen it firsthand!!

  6. Good for you for doing that solo performance! I wish I had seen it, but maybe you would have been more nervous! I'd rather perform in front of strangers than people who know me! Weird right? Anyway, I'm halfway through the badass book and really have seen a shift in my attitude and the way I carry myself. It really is such a powerful tool and I plan on finishing it soon! Definitely by the end of the month. Katie is loving it too! Now onto the persuasion book because I'm constantly being pulled in different directions by people, even family, and I'm over it! Over.it. :)

  7. Those sound like two great books - I tend to read non-fiction because I always like learning things that will help me be better. I am going to download Kindle samples and start reading. Thanks, Gina. (Oh, and I am wearing my Express dress - that I got because of you - on my blog today.)
