Bye September

|
I am going to be completely honest with you: September is my least favorite month to be a blogger. And the reason is simple: it's the month with the biggest discrepancy between what I can wear in real life and what kind of outfits people "like" on Instagram and Pin on Pinterest. This pin has been one of my more popular pins on Pinterest lately:

But it's the hottest month of the year for me, so my reality is more like this (which has been re-pinned zero times since I pinned it):

So I'm not sad that this is my last post for September and hopefully October will bring a little more balance in my weather vs. outfits that connect with the general public.

That said, I decided to link up with What's Up Wednesday (with Sheaffer, Mel and Shay) and answer a few of their questions instead of trying too hard to fit into the fall fashion mold.

What we're eating this week:
I'm addicted to Oatmeal Carmelitas and I've made them twice this month.

Recipe and Image source: here

What I'm loving:
My Kendra Scott Rayne necklaces. I'm probably the last blogger to get on this bandwagon but I have always liked them but just didn't want to spend the money or try to figure out which color to get first! Since I'm not shopping for fall clothes yet I decided now was a good time to get some jewelry, so I got magenta and turquoise:
Tank: Old Navy / Necklace: Nordstrom / Skirt: Express (Similar) / Sandals: Sam Edelman "Georgia" / Watch: Fossil / Bracelet: Purple Peridot / Bag: Danielle Nicole / Ring: Target

Tee: Old Navy / Necklace: NordstromShorts: Target (Similar) / Hat: Target / Sandals: Target (Similar) / Watch: Fossil

What I'm dreading:
Tuesday nights. My kids are doing baseball this fall and one of their practices is Tuesday night for two hours. Add a 25 minute drive each way along with their usual hour of homework each night and it makes for a busy evening. We like to be busy but everyone needs some down time too, and so far I haven't figured out how to make that work on Tuesday.

What I'm working on:
Closet clean-out. I have a pile of stuff ready for donation and another pile I'd like to try selling on Instagram. I've sold on eBay in the past and the fees make it hardly worth my trouble. But I've seen a few people have some success selling on Instagram so I want to try that next.

What I'm excited about:
My favorite yoga instructor (Eoin Finn) acknowledged me on Instagram! I recommended his workouts to someone who asked for suggestions (Power Yoga for Happiness is my all time favorite, especially the Magically Hips Routine if you need a great stretch for your butt, thighs, and hip flexors) and he responded thanking me for the recommendation! That's the biggest brush with fame I've had in a long time!

What I'm watching/reading:
The only TV show I'm keeping up with right now is Dancing with the Stars. And for books I'm slowly working my way through Throne of Glass:

It's the Literary Ladies book of the month for September so I need to hurry up!

What I'm wearing:
I recap my four favorite outfits of the week on the blog every Friday (most recent here), and of course I always share my #OOTD on Instagram, so follow along there to keep up with what I'm wearing.

What I'm looking forward to next month:
Halloween! And tickets to see Marian Hill!

Bonus Question: What's your favorite Halloween tradition?
Little kids in Halloween Costumes. They are just too cute! My kids are in elementary school and not quite so little anymore, but they still like to dress up and they always get excited about their getting their costumes. I know I'll be sad when they don't want to dress up anymore!
(Not my kids! Image Source)

That does it for me today! I'm off to celebrate surviving another September and I'll see you back here in October!

  1. I only like September because it's my birthday month and I'm still in Summer mode. Loving your new necklaces so so pretty. Those carmelitas look yummy.

    1. I should clarify that I think September in and of itself is a great month! I don't mind it at all (my least favorite is actually December). I just the one where I feel most ineffective as a blogger!

  2. It's usually beautiful in PIttsburgh in September, but this year it was sooo hot! I swear it felt even hotter than August. Doesn't make any sense to me! What are you thinking about DWTS so far? Any favorites yet? I am LOVING Tamar..so sassy and a really amazing dancer. I wasn't expecting that! And I kind of want to be Alexa...HOT!

    1. It's hard to pick favorites this early but I will say Bindi has been fun to watch and I love her energy. And of course, she's paired with Derek which is a huge bonus because I always love his choreography. I think I pick my favorites based on the pros almost as much as the stars because I can tell you that I'm really liking Witney and Sharna but I can barely remember their partners!!

  3. I love this post! I always enjoy learning a little more about what my favorite bloggers are up to in real life. I have been thinking about how to incorporate more of this in my fashion posts. Pinterest always seems to be a couple months ahead because I think people use it to help plan and get inspiration. Love your new KS necklaces. I am working on a little closet clean out too. Keep us posted on how selling on IG goes if you do it. Your Tuesdays do sound crazy! I think sports, although great, make for such busy weeks with kids.

    1. Sports can definitely be very time and energy consuming! It's hard to find a good balance. And I think you are totally right about Pinterest being more of a plan-ahead tool for many!

  4. I had so much fun reading this post, Gina. First off, I'm jealous that you still get to wear camis and shorts. I acquired my first KS necklace recently as well and only because they were on sale. Those oatmeal carmelitas look amazing. I'm downloading the recipe right now. And man thanks for reminding me about closet clean-out. I've been wanting to do that for the past couple of years. I don't know why I feel so overwhelmed whenever I think about it. Have a great week!

    1. It IS overwhelming to do a closet clean out! I don't enjoy it but I know I like it when I feel like I have a streamlined closet full of pieces I love! Just as a note, when I made the Carmelitas I used Trader Joe's Fleur de Sel Caramel sauce and I did not add any flour to the caramel sauce as suggested in the recipe. I didn't think it needed it!

  5. not gonna lie, i'm gonna dress my kids up like crazy one day. like, 10 times each halloween. to make up for the fact that i couldn't! tuesday nights sound awful haha. i can't imagine having to deal with other people's schedules as well, gosh i'm a selfish lazy sod. anyway. hope you are enjoying throne of glass, after i read it i can definitely see it's not for everyone, though i loved it. i won't be sad if you give up on it lol

    1. I made it to about 30% of the book last night and I don't want to spoil my final feedback! I will say it was tough to get into but I think I am engaged enough now that I will finish it. Whether I read the next in the series...too soon to say!

  6. I hear you on about your hectic Tuesday routine. One year my 2 older kids played soccer, practice was 2 nights a week, but they had it on different nights, so it was 4 nights a week. Never again! I'd feed them as soon as they got home from school and they still wanted to eat after practice #seconddinner.

I'm in Northern California and September is the hottest month of the summer. Just this week it is finally cool in the morning, hopefully Fall will be here soon and I can finally wear ALL the clothes I've been so busy buying lately, lol!

    1. Haha, I know exactly what you mean. It seems like they are always hungry so if we're not driving to/from somewhere they are eating! That would be SO hectic have a 4 night/week schedule like that! I'm lucky that they put my kids on the same team (because they are close enough in age) otherwise it would probably be much worse!

  7. I curse you for posting those oatmeal carmelitas. I've been trying to eat less sugar/carbs and my mouth started watering just looking at the picture. We have a crazy Tuesday too. Laila has back to back gymnastics and soccer. She doesn't really have time to do homework so she tries to get it done on Monday. Her teacher gives the whole week's assignments on Monday which is so helpful.

    1. Ahh!! What a trooper she is for having the energy for gymnastics AND soccer on the same day! Our teachers do the same with all the homework coming home on Monday. It is helpful to see the week in advance like that!

  8. Trying quickly skim past the picture of the carmelittas and focus on your Rayne necklaces. Love those. I still don't have one because, like you, I can't decide on a color. As busy as I am right now with two little ones, I've been warned that it gets even busier when they're older and have the activities. One of my friends suggested that I make friends with the other moms because carpooling is a life saver. I love the little kid costumes as well, but my favorite tradtion has to be decorating the front porch. One of these days, we're going to be the house on the street that goes all out.

    1. I think both stages are busy...just very different kinds of busy! When they're little you're more physically busy chasing them around and keeping them from getting into/destroying everything. Now I'm more on-the-go busy driving them to/from and keeping them on task and helping with homework etc. I LOVE when people go all out decorating for Halloween! I wish we could too but I don't have room to store all that stuff the rest of the year!

  9. Yeah you're totally baking for me the next time I visit!! Those look amazing! And I'm glad you're digging your Rayne necklaces. I saw your snap and I def think the turquoise is closer to a white gold than a yellow gold but both are still gorgeous regardless! Great choices!
And September is hard for me also because the weather swings both towards fall and summer here so it is screwing with me mentally! Ha!

    1. Yes, we start getting the weather roller coaster in October/November and that's another challenge too! I will definitely have some baked goods ready to go next time you (and Rachelle!) are out here! And thanks for the feedback on the Kendra Scott Rayne necklaces! The turquoise is a very confusing metal and I'm going to try to look at it as a mixed metal that can go with either gold or silver....we'll see how that works out for me!

  12. September is a hard month because it can be 80 degrees one day and 50 the next. Those oatmeal carmelita bars sound amazing! I'm still eyeing the KS necklaces love your pink one! I'm looking forward to seeing the cute trick or treaters come to the door. My daughter dresses up still but it's not the same as when she was little.

  13. I agree with you about the discrepancy about what's going on in Blogland vs what's going on for us gals who live in warmer climates. We may get get a cool down here in Fl for yet another month or two IF we are lucky! LOL. I love both of your outfits you pinned. Really love the marsala cami! Gina, your gorgeous hair is always an added accessory in your pics whenever you let it hang girl!

  14. I couldn't agree with you more! Although September is a special month for me (birthday and wedding anniversary), I hate how hot it is! It really is the hottest month of the year for us here, and its so painful to see what others are wearing, and not being able to participate as a blogger. I can't wait until it cools off!

  15. This is such a fun post Gina! September is brutal for us in Cali, it's such a tease to see fall outfits and not be able to wear them, boo. Although for me, Iove the excitement of Sept. seeing all the new collections and releases, cold weather here we come, lol. I may have to bake that oatmeal desert, double yum :)

  16. I agree about the blogging thing! September is tough because the weather is all over. It's hard to keep a solid, consistent content reel when the weather isn't.

  17. I hear ya on what I can actually wear vs. what the blogosphere wants to see this time of year. It's still pretty hot here, and even up north it's not cold enough to be wearing full on fall gear. I wish everyone didn't always jump the fun on fall clothes because before you know it they'll all be longing for sundresses and shorts again. Happens every year :-P

Keep wearing your gorgeous tanks and shorts girl!

  18. Ok, please sell your items on IG!! It'd be super helpful if you tell us when you'll be posting so we know when we need to be ready to pounce on the cute items! haha. I've had absolutely no luck selling on IG with luck on eBay only. But I'm pretty sure you have way more followers on IG so that might help!

  19. I definitely know what you mean with the warm weather and wanting nothing but layers. It's the same way for me in spring when all I see are bare legs and it's still in the 40s! Either outfit, the burgundy, white, and cognac are stunning together!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Im laughing because your fall pin totally brought me to your blog :) I agree, September is hard to dress for, glad its over!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I totally understand what you mean Gina. I really love fall and winter type fashion, but the reality of living in a warm climate like Florida makes it so hard to keep consistent with fall/winter outfits post. So while my fellow blogger are freezing, I'm wearing items that are for the spring and summer. Either way you fall to summer outfit here looks super cute and works perfectly lol.
