Olive Jeans + October Update

|
Today I'm joining What's Up Wednesday for an end of the month, behind-the-blog life update. You can view the prompt questions for this post here, or just read on below to find out what's been going on around here lately!

What I'm loving: Two things from this outfit: bateau necklines in general and these olive jeans in particular.

These Ann Taylor olive jeans are my first ever pair of pants from Ann Taylor. Olive jeans were on my fall wishlist, and after looking at options from a variety of retailers, this was my favorite option because of the darker wash and more dressy "sateen" fabric. My camo jeans can be styled in a lot of the same ways as these, but those have a more casual vibe so I didn't want to duplicate that. These are a bit pricey but Ann Taylor has pretty frequent sales. They were 40% off when I bought them and with Black Friday just around the corner I have no doubt they'll go on sale again soon. I'm wearing the Modern Fit and took the same size as I do in Express jeans so they are true to size, though I'd say these run just a tiny bit narrower in the thigh, calf and ankles with a bit more room in the waist than my Express jeans. I may try the Curvy fit in my next pair just to see how they compare since they are described as being smaller in the waist and roomier in the hips and thighs. So the belt was equal parts function (keeping the waist area secure) and fashion for this pair.. I'm also wearing the Regular Length (I'm 5'4") and have them cuffed just a little at the ankles.

My cognac mules are true to size and easily my most-worn shoe purchase this fall. See four more ways I've worn them in this post.

I've shared the sleeveless version of this bateau neck tee numerous times on the blog and I loved it so much I got the long sleeve version for cooler weather. It's a great basic: comfortable, true to size, and affordable ($16).

My Rebecca Minkoff Love Crossbody is sold out, but I found a Super Similar Bag for $30! If you prefer a designer option, this cute Tory Burch bag is a really similar shape, size, and color.

I think these jeans would be a great option for a business casual wardrobe, so I styled them a couple of ways here with some other basic pieces.

What I'm wearing: Happy Halloween! I'm dressing as an aging Gen X-er today! (In other words...just being myself!) I ordered this tee to participate with The Blended Blog's graphic tee theme a couple of weeks ago but unfortunately it didn't arrive in time. On the bright side, it's true to size (always a gamble when ordering from overseas retailers!) comfortable, and it does in fact say "Nevermind." I was a bit worried since the product description calls it a "Neverming" t-shirt, and while it's a funny typo it would have made the t-shirt itself useless.

If you need a laugh, please note that the product description for this t-shirt promises the following: "Great for daily life dating, party, beach, office, vacation and leisure place etc. Wear and leggings and a jeans for an ultra chic look, Classic and elegant design, You will receive many compliments." What more could you want from a t-shirt? Though I must say I've worn this once and sadly I did not receive "many" compliments! No compliments at all, in fact! Just strange looks from my kids. Ha!

What I'm eating: I've been trying to find a good protein bar for my pre-workout snack first thing in the morning, and so far ONE bars are winning for me. They're low in sugar and actually taste pretty good! I've tried all of the flavors below with Almond and Maple being my favorites. The other two were just okay to me (wouldn't re-purchase), but your tastes may vary! In general I think the brand is worth a try if you have a need for protein bars in your lifestyle.

What I've been up to: Same old, same old! Work during the day, kid stuff in the evening, blogging and family time on the weekend. I did go to my first book club meeting last month and it was a nice group, but only two of us had finished the book! I know it's normal (from what my friends tell me) for book clubs to only talk a little bit about the book, but in this case we really didn't talk about it at all. The group was nice so I think I'll keep going and hope some of the future book discussions are more in depth about the book. I really liked the book selection (Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows) so I guess I'll just have to discuss it with the virtual book community as usual!

What I'm readingThe Girl with a Clock for a Heart by Peter Swanson. Once I finish this one I'll have read every book by this author, and I'm excited in a nerdy way to complete this task.

What I'm working on: My November Book Reviews coming on the November 13th! Last month I had a lot of "meh" reads but this month I had some great ones and I can't wait to share. Here's a little behind the blogging scenes on my book review posts: I usually write each review within a day or two of finishing the book in my Draft Post throughout the month so that I only have to put together the collage image on the day before the post. On the plus side of this method, my thoughts and impressions are fresh so I can be detailed about what I did or didn't like. The only negative I'm finding of this method is that when I've just finished, I can't really assess the "lasting power" of a book. Sometimes I don't realize the impact of a book until a little time has gone by and I find myself reflecting on it more or quoting it/wanting to share it in real life quite frequently. I guess that's the point of the "Best of the Year" books reviews. I'll do another one this December and go through past reviews to see which books really stand out as favorites!

What I'm listening toCover Up Podcast. Very interesting research and look at the Chappaquiddick Incident (involving senator Ted Kennedy) from the 1960s. If you like True Crime and/or political scandal, definitely check this out.

What I'm watching: After I finished the podcast on this topic I watched the movie Chappaquidick  to see how they would portray and interpret the events. I recommend doing the podcast first so you  have a better understanding of everything that happens in the movie. My husband watched the movie with me but didn't listen to the podcast so I had to pause a lot to explain things they glossed over quickly. That said, it was still entertaining and we both enjoyed it.

I also watched The Hunger Games movie with my youngest last weekend. I read the book ages ago when it first came out, but never watched the movie! I really enjoyed it and thought it was well done. It's been forever since I read the book so I could be wrong but it seemed like they stayed fairly true to the book. Although there seemed to be a lot of sexual chemistry between Lenny Kravitz and Jennifer Lawrence that I don't recall from the book!  (Maybe that was just me?)  Anyway, I now I want to watch the rest of the movies in the series!

What I'm doing this weekend: Volunteering at a school fundraiser. I haven't been able to help out during school hours much this year due to my day job so I'm doing a little more after-hours volunteering to make up for it.

I skipped a lot of the prompt questions this month because I really couldn't think of anything! And yet somehow this still seems like a pretty lengthy post, so if you made it through I'd say you're pretty up to date!

  1. They are such cute olive jeans and I like that belt with them! I'm glad to have added more olive jeans to my wardrobe, haha! In fact I linked up the post with them! I think they are a great alternative to blue! :)

Thank you for the link up!

I haven't read the hunger games books or seen the movies but I am looking forward to introducing my kids to the harry potter series when they are older! :)

  2. This is great - I really like the Ann Taylor olive jeans on you - I have never tried their denim only dress pants. The t-shirt - how funny is that description! I do think it will be a great Halloween costume though so enjoy and thank goodness the typo was on the site and not the shirt. I read Hunger Games with my oldest when he was a 6th grader, it was required reading for him and when he told me about it I was intrigued. We enjoyed the movies too. Seems like ages ago - I guess it was since he is almost 21!
    Have a great Halloween1

  6. The description for your graphic tee is golden, truly golden and I'm not at all surprised you didn't get it on time! Happy it came with the correct lettering. You life lately sounds right on! As for the book club, I was involved in one back in Georgia and they were strict about actually talking about the book...it always pushed me to finish the book because I knew if I wanted to contribute I had to finish it, or at least read half. Of course there were times when I did it, like the summer they chose Bonhoffer by Eric Metaxas. That was not a sit by the pool read. haha! Anyway, I'm in need of an olive pair myself, as my distressed pair is in full on anxiety! Thanks for hosting and providing great content!

    1. Honestly, before the podcast I couldn't have told you anything about it except that maybe a Kennedy was involved. So you're not alone!

  10. I love those olive jeans! I also have that on my fall/winter wishlist and I really do like the darker wash of that pair. I will keep my eye out for sales!
I liked reading about how you put together your book review posts. I think it's a great idea to write each review as you finish the book. I usually wait to write the whole post at once and it takes FOREVER. But at the same time I totally get what you mean about not always knowing your true feelings about a book right away, sometimes it does take a bit to sink in. Ahhh book lover problems. :)

    1. Yes...when I first started doing them I was doing them all in a day and it would take at least 6 hours. Plus, it's amazing how much you forget in just a couple of weeks!

  11. I received a pair of olive jeans from Stitch Fix that I absolutely love. At first I wasn't going to keep them because I already owned a pair of olive twill pants. But, like yours, the wash was darker and the fabric more of a sateen, so I kept them. I'm so glad I did because I've been wearing them constantly. I think the darker wash goes with more than a lighter olive. Love your look! You're always so cutely dressed!

    1. Thank you Amy! And yes, I do find this wash a bit dressier. And lighter olive makes me feel like Peter Pan. LOL!!

  14. I love bateau necklines as well because they are so flattering! Love yours paired with the olive pants! They seem very versatile. And lol at your gen- xer costume! I couldn’t help but chuckle! And for the record, I was always obsessed with nirvana and still am really :)

  15. I have both camo and olive pants and find ways to wear them both. I like the olive pair because they can be dressed up a bit more like you did with yours!

    1. Yes exactly!! Camo just feels more casual. Even with a t-shirt these just look more dressy.

  18. bateau necklines are so flattering on you! i have a few and i like them a lot, but they tend to be on more fitted tops - not tight, but not shapeless and loose like i seem to like tops lately. i also love those olive jeans - i used to have a pair and didn't love them but i love that yours are darker because i don't like the lighter wash... i think i need them. i would definitely need the curvy fit though, i had a pair of modern fit grey/purple jeans and they kept falling down because they were so big in the waist. oops. might have to go into the store and try them on (aren't you just riveted by my stream of consciousness haha sorry). eh, my book club always talks about the book! we catch up while we are eating, and then it's down to business ;) i agree about the lasting power of books, there's no way to tell until time has gone by i guess!

    1. Actually I DO love your stream of consciousness comments! They are so fun! :) Fingers crossed that we do more book talk in the next book club. Otherwise maybe I need to start my own. Hmm.....
