Camo Cover Up + Connecting

|
Just when I thought, "okay, I have enough camo pieces in my closet now, I need to slow my roll" Express came out with something I didn't have yet and it was too hard to resist! Kind of like the sailor pants I shared last week, I don't think this piece is something I'd consider a timeless classic. But it fits nicely into my casual lifestyle right now so I do think I can get plenty of use out if this fall and winter.

This camo cover up runs true to size but slightly oversized in the arms. Not so much that I think you need to size down, but if you're between sizes go with the smaller size. It's a medium weight, soft, and more like a sweatshirt material than a cardigan. I wore this over the weekend to take my kids to practice, do a Target run, and then out to a casual dinner with my husband. I had my kids take a couple of pictures while we were out and about, but I realized after the fact I really shouldn't have taken them in front of trees or any greenery! It did almost camouflage me a bit! Ha! This was the only one I took against a solid background so while it wasn't my favorite, it worked best for seeing the details on this cover up.

I've had these grey jeans for a few years and I still like them for variety from my usual blue or black. I think they're somewhat on the bigger side to the point that you could almost size down. It probably depends on how you carry your weight. I also tried them in a size down and it fit better in the waist but it was less comfortable in the butt and thighs so I decided to stay with my normal size. The most difficult thing for me with these jeans is pairing them with shoes! I like them best with black pumps, but that was just too dressy and uncomfortable for a casual, errand running kind of day. Most of my taupe ankle boots are a darker taupe/tan color than these mules and I just don't like that pairing as much, so I'm going to be on the lookout this year for some ankle boots in this lighter, "blonde" taupe shade. I like this Marc Fisher pair but they're $200. This Kendall + Kylie Pair ($100) looks good too and is a little more reasonably priced. I'm putting those on my November wishlist unless I find a better option/better price before then.
I put together a couple of other outfits for this camo cardigan. Even if it's not a timeless classic, it is a pretty easy piece to style with other wardrobe basics. And if you don't have a denim skirt, regular blue jeans would work just as well in outfit two!

When I'm not joining any themed link-ups on Wednesdays, I like to share and connect on some general lifestyle topics. Something I've been thinking about lately is how much working from home has affected my shopping habits and everyday style. It might not be that easy to tell since I'm sharing fewer outfits overall here, so naturally the ones I'm sharing are the ones where I'm the most put together! But if I have a work from home day where the kids don't have evening activities and I don't have errands to run, I'm in t-shirts and comfy shorts, joggers, leggings, etc. On top of that, knowing that I have fewer days per week to get dressed in a "real" outfit makes me reconsider my clothing budget and closet needs. How many unique outfits do I honestly need when I am only outside the house 2-4 times per week? And considering what I already own, how much more can I justify? I do love clothes and outfits, but I also love being responsible with my spending and with this recent change in lifestyle (working from home vs. stay-at-home-mom), I can tell I need to do some re-evaluating. This is also part of why I've cut out my participation on Instagram. I know I can't spend much time there without being tempted to buy far more than I need. It's like knowing I need to cut out sugar for my health but deciding to browse the chocolate shop for entertainment. Why subject myself to more temptation?

Another way that my new job is affecting my shopping habits is that the return process is becoming a much bigger consideration in where I'm willing to shop. One round trip run to the mall for a return is going to cost me an hour of time, and it's a lot harder to find that hour these days. Even if I can find the hour, I'd rather be at home reading a book and recharging my batteries than driving 20 minutes to/from the mall, hunting for parking, dealing with the crowds, waiting in line at the store, etc. We do have a few postal stores nearby that only require a 10-15 minute round-trip commitment to mail back a return, so that's a lot more reasonable. Plus I can tack it on to a Target run and then I'm really only adding 5 minutes to my day for that. But I don't want to spend a lot on shipping costs (when buying or returning!), so I'm favoring retailers like Amazon or stores with ShopRunner shipping which functions just like Prime: you pay an annual fee for unlimited free 2-Day shipping and free returns for stores like Express, American Eagle/Aerie, and Ann Taylor. (And that's not an affiliate link to ShopRunner - I'm happy to share their brand and keep them in business because I genuinely love the service.) In the past couple of years I've found a lot of great pieces at stores like Abercrombie and Old Navy, but I avoid browsing them lately because the thought of dealing with possible returns seems more trouble than it's worth.

I think in the past I was a little naive about recommending that people buy something and, "just return it if it doesn't work out." That's easier said than done depending on where you live and how much time you have in your schedule for returns of any kind! I've learned my lesson on that and apologize if I was a bit inconsiderate about that before. At any rate, I love hearing from you all about how a new job or a move or any other change in circumstances has a trickle down effect even into things as simple as your shopping habits! You all have great insight and experiences and I enjoy learning from you so I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Great read Gina and I can relate. I honestly don't get out of the house much at all so getting dressed in anything presentable is optional. The temptation to buy things is always there because I LOVE clothes but I'm trying to think more realistically. Old Navy has free returns - all you have to do is go online and print the shipping label! It's not highly advertised but it is something that makes it easier for me. Although I had 8 things to return to them the other day so I went to the store when they opened and took care of that, I wanted it off my credit card before my bill came so it was worth it. I had ordered a bunch of items for my boys to choose from for family pictures. I don't normally have returns that large. But I am with you, I need free shipping and free returns because I don't enjoy leaving the house for that purpose only. I am really becoming a hermit - ha!
Cute camo cover up! It looks so cozy and soft. I'm sure you'll get lots of wear out of it!

    1. Oh em gee! Thank you for telling me about Old Navy returns!! I didn't know that! I still have to shop there sometimes for my boys so that will make my life much easier!

  2. Such a cute casual cardi! :) So fun it actually did camoflague you a bit! :)

I find returns difficult to so that's a big part of me buying less, as well as the lifestyle change with two kids and working part time. I'm buying less than I used to and spending less than I used to - partly because I have less time to shop and try new things! Always interesting seeing how habits change when life changes!

Hope that you are having a great week so far :)

  3. Oh Gina, do I ever get it..first though..CUTE as a button CAMO!! When I was working in the professional world, I was buying dresser clothes all the time, now I am more toned down and actually find myself returning stuff waaaay more but it does take so much time so you are so right, not always an option. GREAT post sweet girlfriend!!

  4. The camo cover up is so cute! I love how you styled it.

I really appreciate your honesty and candor. I have found myself getting in over my head with so many “swipe up” links and the gotta have it all mentality of Instagram influencers. I am following spending less time there and working on purchasing less and looking for more ideas on how to style what I have. That said, it is hard to change one’s habits but always good to reevaluate.

    1. Oh thanks Kristie! Yes, once Swipe Up was added, the try on sessions became RAMPANT. I admit they can be fun, entertaining, and even helpful to see stuff on a real person. But they just made me want wayyyyyy too many things I don't need.

  5. Love this camo cover up, I got one this year but haven't had the opportunity to wear it yet. But I'm taking it with me to NOLA.

I've been dealing with this for a few years now, working from home is great and saves me money. So yea I don't need as much clothes as I used to, I went from getting dressed 5 to 7 times weekly to 2 to 3 times. Like this week I didn't get dressed at all. I think that's why I was successful in my closet purge because this time I knew I couldn't buy new stuff. Now I'm at a point where I really don't need to buy anything like at all, unless something need to be replaced. And I cannot justify buying things for the blog, that's just so wasteful. However, the few times I get dresses I only want to wear my favorite things, so believe it or not, I am purging some more.

I used to do returns easily because I was out everyday but now it's not worth it.

Can't wait to see your new camo piece!!

  6. Lord the time I spend on making returns...ugh! And I was so pissed last week when I went to make a return to Express (one of the few stores actually left at our mall) and found out our location has been turned into a "factory" store so I can no longer make returns there. boooooo

  7. Same here. I'm at home so really don't need too much in the way of clothing. Curtailing shopping is a constant battle and strangely, I find I'm buying less now that I'm blogging. I think it's because I'm able to re-channel that shopping tendency into shopping for another purpose (and I don't actually buy as much as choose things to add to widgets etc..) I really like that Amazon Wardrobe program that I tried out on the blog. It's pretty convenient.

    1. Oh Prime Wardrobe? Yes, it is a great option!! Although 90% of the fashion pieces I want aren't part of that program so I don't get to use it as much as I thought I would.

  8. I've worked from home for years and even though I get dressed most days, my outfits are pretty casual. I definitely don't buy as much and am more selective when I do buy something. I do most of my shopping online, gotta love free shipping and returns! Love your camo cardigan and how you styled it!

  9. I love how camo has become so mainstream.
Being retired, I can so relate to this. The problem is I love shopping and different clothes, so I've been trying to venture out at least every other day just to have a reason to put on cute clothes!!
But right now?? I'm still in pjs.

Even though I do work outside the home every day, I am still trying to cut back on shopping. My closet is overflowing and I need to be content with what I have, instead of jumping on the latest trend bandwagon.

  14. Well that is a cute camo piece and I bet you'll wear it a ton. I wish more stores were on Shoprunner. I got a free year memebership (through Soma) but have yet to use it. I also feel your pain on gray jeans and shoes. I'm never quite sure what to wear with them other than black. I think the lighter pair you had on look good though, so if I still even have my gray jeans, maybe I'll try that. Happy Wednesday!! XO

    1. Yes, I like them with black shoes as long as there's some space that shows my feet! (Like with pumps). I don't really like them as much with black ankle boots, though I have worn them that way for lack of a better option. They are tough.

As far as ShopRunner - I'm with you. I can't believe Ann Taylor is on there but not Loft?! Why!? I use Express the most and occasionally AE and AT. I noticed Saks off 5th is there and they have the boots I want so I guess I'll be trying them next!

  15. This camo cover up is magnificent! And now I want one! I just added a camo jacket, camo pants, a camo skirt, and a camo dress to my fall wardrobe, but I am always game for more camo! I am not big into returning items. I like to try on things while shopping and even if they don’t work out, I usually end up just keeping them. I kind of hate the return process!

  16. Love this camo coverup. I just ventured this fall into a camo light jacket and love it. As far as shopping and returns, I am doing less in store and more online, mostly because of my job location changes and now shorter lunch time makes it impossible to go anywhere! In addition with my husband currently out of work, trying to keep spending to minimum. I do love Old Navy and Target for prices/shipping and free returns. Also Old Navy has great rewards program with their credit card. Can't beat that. Would love to shop online at some others like Loft, but their return policies just don't agree with me! So, I decide that if I really want something there I have to make the effort to physically get there in person and try it on.

    1. I'm so with you. I see tons of cute stuff from LOFT but 90% of the time I don't go for it because their sizing isn't very consistent for me and I dread the return process. Plus their shipping is usually expensive!! I've heard great things about the ON credit card!

  17. I absolutely hate retuning stuff, but find myself doing it more often with online shopping. If only I had time to shop in-store more (or if I were disciplined enough to shop online less)!

I’m in the market for a sleek pair of dark grey jeans...haven’t tried any from express in a long time after finding wit and wisdom, but I probably should get back into Express! I always prefer their Fall clothes over their Summer stuff

  22. I started working outside of the home more lately, which had caused me to shop a little more to build back my office attire. However, you do reach a point, where it just feels like too much! I'm with you on scaling back on Instagram, it always encourages me to shop, I have a hard time being on there at all without making a purchase. I'm also with you on returns. I only order from places that I know will be an easy return, because I return a lot. a good 50% of what I order doesn't actually fit and gets returned. I do love your camo sweater, such a fun trendy piece!

  23. I love the camo cardigan. I just bought my first ever piece of clothing in camo print...well two actually because I couldn't decide between the Mango jeans and some from Gap, so I decided to keep both pairs. The Mango jeans are a darker, more subtle print, so that's how I'm justifying the spend...also, the Gap jeans were half price with an extra 10% off! I do a lot of my shopping online and getting to the post office for returns can be a hassle when I'm working long days. I try to only shop where I can get free delivery and returns, otherwise it gets expensive!
