Denim Shirt + June Update

|
Today I'm joining What's Up Wednesday for an end of the month, behind-the-blog life update. You can view the prompt questions for this post here, or just read on to find out what's been going on around here lately!

What I'm wearing:
This denim shirt has been in a couple of outfits this past month in a supporting capacity, but I haven't said too much more about it so I wanted to talk about it today since it's still fully stocked and a great piece to wear now as an "accessory" and later on through the upcoming seasons.
LEFTT-Shirt Dress (c/o) | Denim Shirt | Necklace (c/o) | Earrings | White Bag + Sandals (c/o Shopbop)

This shirt is true to size (I'm wearing XS which is normal for me in shirts at GAP), soft, and comfortable. It also has some nice tapering at the waist, which I like in all of my button-down shirts,  but is tough to find in denim or chambray shirts. Most of the affordable options I looked at (e.g. from Target and Old Navy) had no shape at the waist. This one goes on sale for 40% off every other day, so it's roughly $36 and definitely nicer than the options I tried in the $20-30 price range. I really like this J. Crew Chambray Shirt too, but it's a bit of a splurge and numeric sizing is always makes it tougher for me to order online.

Here are a few more ways to style this denim shirt for now and later. In looking at these pics I wish I had worn a belt with the white jeans outfit. But that's part of why I do these try-ons...so I can learn what works and what doesn't for each of these pieces!

What I'm eating this week: My taste buds have been really weird this summer. I haven't had tuna for years but all of a sudden I've been in the mood for it. If I'm home alone, some days I'll make tuna salad and have it on top of Whole Wheat Ritz crackers for lunch. And now you know why I said, "if I'm home alone" since I try not to annoy my family with smelly foods. I also try not to have it more than twice a week because of the mercury concerns.

What I'm dreading: Back to school time. (Insert screaming/frowning emoji.) Summer has just been so nice and it goes by way too quickly!

What I'm working on: Well, since you asked...I'll tell you that I've been working on an e-book to send out as a freebie when I finally start my newsletter list. It's been quite a challenge for me on so many levels but I'm pleased with how it's coming along and am excited to share. There's a sneak peek up on my Instagram story right now that you can catch before it expires tonight.

What I'm watching: After hearing so many great reviews and recommendations for it, my husband and I finally started watching The Crown. It is really interesting (albeit slow in parts) and well done. It's also prompted quite a bit of Googling so we can learn more about some of the historical events and people involved in the show.

What I'm reading: I just finished Colleen Hoover's All Your Perfects and I couldn't put it down! If you're in a reading slump go get this book! I did get annoyed with one of the main characters but it didn't stop me from devouring the book. I'll save all the details for my August book reviews. For my most recent round of reviews check out my July Book Reviews or head to the menu bar up top and click Categories > Book Reviews for all book reviews. Now I'm starting The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin. Reviews are mixes so I'm setting my expectations low and hoping for 3.5-4 stars! Ha!

What I'm listening to: My current Audiobook is The Happiness Advantage. It's pretty good but so far I doubt it will replace any of my top ten from this post. When I'm listening to music, I usually listen to the "Pop Before it Breaks" station Google Play. If I'm writing the text for my posts (like now!) I find lyrics distracting, so I'll do classical piano (Chopin is my fave) or violin music instead.

What I'm doing this weekend: I'll be at the Oregon Coast this weekend, doing a lot of the same things I did last year!

What I'm looking forward to next month: Hm, not a lot of exciting stuff on the calendar for August right now. Hopefully I can change that. I do have an eye appointment, and while I'm not looking forward to the appointment per se, I am looking forward to checking that off my to-do list since its long overdue!

And that's it for today! Although I'll be heading to Oregon today, I do have posts scheduled for Friday and Monday so the blog schedule will carry on as usual. I may just fall a bit behind in comments so thanks for your patience and understanding!

  1. Oh yes, it will be back to school time before we know it and that is always a bummer - I love the lazy days of summer with no schedules or homework! Love the shade of that denim shirt. I've had a few and either I don't care for the wash/color or the fit isn't quite right. I have one now from AE but I'm not loving it, I had one from JCF and got rid of it. The perfect one eludes me it seems!
That Colleen Hoover book sounds terrific - I need a great one!
    Have fun in Oregon!!!!

    1. Okay, I'm glad to know it's not just me who has struggles to find a good denim shirt! It's a great staple but they're not all created equally. So far so good with this one, at least as a summer layer.

  2. Love a denim/chambray shirt - soooo great with white jeans, but I also love it tied around your waist with the dress! Very cute.

And yes, The Crown made me want to Google a lot too :)

    1. Thanks Anne! At this point, I would keep it just for tying around my waist with t-shirt dresses like this! They can all use a little extra shape that way. Glad I'm not the only one who needed a few history lessons thanks to The Crown! :)

    1. Yeah, it's a tough piece to find the right color and fit! And I'm sure we don't have a lot of the same stores so US bloggers aren't much help to you!

  4. I haven't had tuna for years as well, when I do eat fish I prefer smaller ones like snapper but I hate cleaning fish so I don't eat it as often anymore. Can't wait to see you ebook, I've always wanted to do one about work outfits maybe yours will inspire me.
Have fun this weekend on your family trip.

    1. Oh you should totally do a workwear e-book! If mine can inspire you it will be worth it just for that. :)

  5. Denim/Chambray shirts are the best. I love tying them in the front. I used to make tuna salad all the time. My family actually loves it when I make tuna melts on English Muffins. Have fun pretty lady!

  6. I love all the ways you styled that denim shirt! I have heard so many good things about The Crown but I haven't watched it yet because it looks so boring to me. Someday, I will have to check it out.

    1. Ha, I was in the same boat as you, Amy. I put it off for a long time thinking it would be too slow. I don't think I love it as much as a lot of people, but it is better than I thought it would be! :)

    1. Haha, and there's the traffic aspect too! Just one more drawback of Back to School!

  8. This is all so great, Gina! I have been wearing my denim shirt as “an accessory” this summer, too. It’s too hot to actually wear it but it creates the best silhouette tied around the waist! I started watching The Crown, too, but fell off of it. Thanks for the reminder, I need to get back to it. It is so good! And YES to tuna on crackers. One of my favorite light lunches!

    1. Same here- too hot to actually wear the shirt 95% of the day, but it does add some nice shape. And good luck getting back into The Crown. It's not a show that I find as addictive as some others, but that's kind of a good thing since I just watch it when I have time instead of making time when I shouldn't!

  9. Have fun in Oregon! I also get a ton of use out of my chambray button-up shirt that I've had for years. I wear it like a cardigan this time of year, and as a shirt or layer in the fall/winter. I'm a little nervous about the start of school, since this will be my first year with a kid in school (rather than daycare/preschool). It's exciting, but overwhelming with all the stuff to do/buy.

    1. Ooh, congrats on your first year of "real" school! The beginning of the year is pretty hectic but elementary school overall was a really fun time for my kids. :)

  10. I love a good denim shirt- you can really wear it so many different ways. And I'm totally like you re: eye appointments and the like; I don't LIKE going, but I love checking that errand off my list!

    Have fun in Oregon!

    1. Exactly! And an eye exam is much less uncomfortable than a dentist appointment (or GYN for that matter)..., so there's that. :)

  11. I watched the Crown a few months ago and loved it! I hope season 2 comes out on amazon soon! It's a really interesting look at the monarchy in a historical context.
