Fun Finds for the 4th

|
Every year at my kids summer day camp, they have a "red white and blue" themed day just prior to the 4th of July holiday. We know from past experience that some people go all-out with the themes and really make it fun. But most of the time, we tend to forget about themed days until the night before/morning of and then it's too late to get anything fun for it. Well not this year! We actually planned ahead and hopped on Amazon to get them some fun, inexpensive items, and of course I stumbled across some things I liked for myself, like this sweater-tank. I love that it's patriotic without being over the top, so I can easily wear it the rest of summer. If you're in the U.S.A, it has 2-day Prime Shipping, so you still have time to order online and wear it for the holiday!

I'm wearing an XS in this sweater tank, and I do like the fit and would say it runs true to size. But I also kind of wish I had tried the Small, too. The model in the stock photo is wearing a Small and I like the slightly longer, more relaxed look it gives her. So I guess my size tip on this is if you want a more fitted look get your normal size (e.g. whatever size you order at Express), but if you want a looser, more relaxed fit go up one size.

Let's get awkward and talk a little about unmentionables with this sweater...the open knit means your bra can potentially show through. I tried this on with several different bras/underthings before wearing it out and taking photos. First I tried it with a white cami underneath, and I didn't like that. Partly because I felt like it showed through in the navy stripe sections, and partly because with a top like this...if if needs a cami underneath it's not a good summer top! Next I tried it with a nude bra, and I still felt like it didn't look right. Finally I tried a black bra, and that's ultimately what I ended up wearing. It seemed the most "invisible" of the three. I wore a regular style, but I think a racerback might be what I try next since I did have to fuss with the straps a bit to keep them hidden by the straps of the tank.

These cognac espadrille sandals are also true to size, and a good dressy/casual option for summer. I was in between sizes on the blogger favorite Treasure & Bond espadrilles, so I was glad to find these since they serve a similar purpose.

Here's the selfie version of today's outfit plus a couple of other options for styling this top:

While I don't wear a lot of red clothing, I do love red accents like lips, nails, and accessories. Here are a few red pieces I've picked up lately that will probably be part of my 4th of July look!

Red Slip-Ons:  When I posted all of my favorite striped pieces on Wednesday, I kept thinking all of those outfits would be so cute with red sandals. I found this pair for $20 with Prime Shipping and all five star reviews, so they're on their way to me now!

Red Earrings: I'm wearing these in today's outfit photos above, but for reference I ended up cutting off two tassel segments on each earring. I wanted a slightly narrower fan/flare on the red fringe and that was an easy fix. These are also under $10 with Prime Shipping and they're light enough for me to wear all day.

Red Nail Polish: I just redid my toes in this color - Essie Fishnet Stockings. It's not that easy to see my toes in the photos of me above, but this is what I'm wearing. Darker, cherry reds tend to look better on me than a brighter, fire engine red so this one worked out great.

Red Lipstick: I'm also wearing Milani Red Label lipstick in the photos above (lined with Rimmel Exaggerate Liner in Obsession), because it just seemed like a red lip was the only way to go to complete the look! I do think finding the perfect red lip color for yourself is a process of trial and error, but for drugstore brands I love Milani lipsticks. They are great quality for the price (only $2.99 at Target), so even if you have to go through a few colors to find the right one for yourself, you don't have to spend a fortune on the "wrong" ones.

I stumbled on a few other fun pieces I couldn't resist sharing today. If red's not your color maybe some of these blue pieces will suit you better. Plus, all of these have prime shipping so you can still get them for the 4th.

I ordered the 2-pack of the flag sunglasses for my kids to wear at camp, but I had to stop myself from ordering both pairs of shoes for me! I have to tell you, in putting together today's post it really made me wonder about my friends outside the states. Do you all dress up like your flag for your national holidays? Or is this a kind of quirky thing we do in the States? I know a few bloggers from the U.K. or Australia and I just don't remember them posting themed outfits like this! Let me know how your traditions for the if you're outside the U.S., and if you're here in the states let me know if you're adding some festive spirit to your outfit for the 4th!

    1. I agree- I think the red/white/blue nautical vibes work well all summer! It's not like a Christmas tree sweater where you have to stop wearing it December 26. Ha!

  6. That sweater tank is perfect for the 4th and beyond, love the way you styled it. Glad you mentioned the unmentionables because sometimes that's the one thing that keeps us from wearing something. A red lip is so classic and I may have to try the Milani color!
