Blush Skirt + May Update

|
If you've followed my blog for awhile, you know I don't wear a lot of skirts and dresses. I do actually like them, and I especially think they're cute on other people. But when I buy them for myself, more often than not they don't work out. After several failed attempts in a row, I just stop trying with them altogether for awhile. The thing is, they really do come in handy. With dresses the one-piece-and-done factor is hard to beat for convenience when getting dressed. With skirts, they're a nice in-between for pants and shorts. So despite being "off" skirts for awhile, when I saw this pretty skirt I decided to try getting back "on" with skirts since it looked like a length that would work for me and a color that would be great for Spring and Summer and mix easily with my wardrobe.

SKIRT: This runs true to size but doesn't come in Tall or Petite lengths. For reference, I'm 5'4" so that may help you determine how the length will be on your height.  The waistline does come all the way up to my waist so there is a little room there for adjustment  by riding it higher or lower on your waist/hips depending on how you want it to fit. It's fully lined so I didn't have any issues with it being see-through. It also has pockets, but I couldn't easily access them because they were tucked up under my tank. I also tried this with the tank tucked into the skirt (so it looked like a bodysuit), but I didn't like the proportions with the jacket. Maybe it would have worked if I wasn't wearing the jacket but I needed it that day!

JACKET: I linked my exact jacket at two retailers. I bought mine at Nordstrom, but the sizes are almost sold out there, whereas 6pm currently has this in more sizes and for a 30% lower price. It's true to size, soft and comfortable, but it is a splurge. For a more budget-friendly version that looks very similar and has great reviews, try this jacket.

Tory Burch Sandals: It seems people who have these are 50/50 on whether to order your normal size or go up half a size. I take my normal size, but it's probably a gamble either way on your first pair. If you don't want to splurge on the Miller Sandals, Sam Edelman has a great option for under half the price, and this budget option was recommended by one of my readers and is truly budget-friendly at under $15.

May Update:
Today I'm joining What's Up Wednesday for an end of the month, behind-the-blog life update. You can view the prompt questions for this post here, or just read on for the latest!

What I'm eating this week: I'll probably be going out to eat a lot more than normal this week. My mom is coming in town today and I like taking her out to lunch for some quality visiting time while the kids are at school. I really want to take her to ParanĂ¡ Empanadas at Liberty Station because I think they're delicious and she probably will too, but they're not something my kids really enjoy so I rarely go.

What I'm loving: Tillamook Farmstyle Cut Cheddar. It's shredded cheddar cheese but the shreds are thick and the taste is so much better than any other pre-shedded cheese I've tried. I bought mine at Target but I'm sure a lot of grocery stores carry it.

What I've been up to: Tackling my summer bucket list, which included more beach days this year. We sort of went to the beach on Memorial Day, but it was cool and cloudy so it wasn't quite what I had in mind for "beach day." But we all had fun anyway and it was a free activity, so it's a good reminder of why we should go even if it's not a perfect day.

What I'm dreading: The last week two weeks of school. I'm actually looking forward to the kids being on summer break, but the last few weeks of school is the storm before the calm. There are tons of events and lots of half-days so it gets hectic trying to attend everything and keep track of what's happening.

What I'm working on: Leveling up the graphics for my blog and Instagram. It's time consuming and challenging for me since I'm not naturally inclined towards this stuff, but like most things it does get a little easier with practice so I'm starting to feel like there's hope for me. This was also part of my summer bucket list so I feel like I can't back out now since I already told you all about it.

What I'm excited about: The kids have their Spring Concerts this week and I love seeing them perform what they've learned on their instruments this year. The progress over the course of a year is pretty amazing! And bonus that my mom gets to see them with me since she's the source of any musical skill in our family!

What I'm watching: We just finished Season One of Cobra Kai on YouTube Red and I can't stop recommending it to anyone who will listen. If you watched the original Karate Kid in the 80s it's a must see! And if you have tweens/teens I bet they'll like it too. My kids love it and when I posted about it on Instagram, I heard back from several families who loved it too.

What I'm reading: I just finished In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware (same author as The Woman in Cabin 10) and it was a good suspense novel. I actually think I liked it the best out of the three novels I've read by this author. I'm also reading Captivate by Vanessa van Edwards on Audiobook and give that one high marks as well. My next full book review post will be June 12 with detailed reviews on these and more, but if you need a recommendation right now I have hundreds of book reviews here.

What I'm listening to: I'm enjoying Tove Styrke's Album "Sway" ("Say My Name" is a favorite song) and Charlie Puth's album "Voicenotes" ("The Way I Am" is on repeat.)

What I'm looking forward to next month: I'm trying something new next month to expand my local network, and although there are some nerves about it, overall I'm looking forward to it. It's not a blogger group per se, but I signed up for the Hatched Collective "Coffee + Conversation" get together. I also convinced my blogger friend Noelle to go with me and check it out so I will at least know one person there. That always helps with the first-timer nerves!

Thanks for reading today! Tomorrow I'll be sharing my current sunless tanning favorites here, but if you follow me on Instagram I'll be posting it on my stories today. After that I do have family in town this week and didn't get a chance to prepare anything in advance over the holiday weekend, so Friday's post is TBD. Thanks for understanding and have a great week!

  1. I'm a huge fan of skirts and dresses because it's so hot here and after years of wearing shorts I realized they're so much cooler. But I gave them up for a long time when my kids were younger - I preferred pants and shorts and kept skirts and dresses only for special occasions. Your skirt is so pretty and feminine and I really like the way you styled it with the tank and denim jacket. I hope to see it more on the blog because you wear it so well!
Enjoy the visit with your mom. It will be nice to have some alone time with her while the kids are still in school. The storm before the calm is the perfect way to describe the last two weeks of school! So hectic! End of year concerts are pretty amazing - it is mind boggling to me how a music teacher can teach all different students on all different instruments. My younger son played sax and I always loved his jazz concerts! Your mom will no doubt enjoy the concerts as well!

    1. YES! That's what amazes me - it's not like the number of different instruments and total number of students for ONE teacher. Way more than a regular class size at our school. Teachers are amazing. :) And I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in thinking the last few weeks are crazy!! Thanks for the compliments on the skirt - I'll definitely be sharing more ways to wear it in the future. :)

  3. You had a few bodycon style dresses from Express that always looked good on you. I also love the skirt on you. I really liked Captivate. I did the audio version and she narrated her own book and I think that helped because she is very.....captivating. I also follow her on YouTube and have learned some great tips for either me or one of the students I counsel for people skills. Her "People School" sounds interesting but is $1000.

    1. You know, I still have some of those skirts but they are fitted and do tend to ride up. So as my kids have gotten older, I've gotten a bit more self-conscious about wearing them to their school events and what not. So they've become more of a date night thing than daytime. They are comfortable, though!

  4. That's a cute skirt! I usually wear a lot of dresses and skirts in the warmer weather, but this summer was definitely the summer of shorts for me, haha! It's good to have options.

Thank you for the link up!

Hope that you are having a great week so far :)

  5. I don't wear skirts too often, either- I just tend to reach for shorts or go with a summer dress. I love this pretty blush on you!

  6. Have fun at lunch with your mom, that sounds fun! Also, that cheese sounds really good! When I can I just buy a brick and shred cheese myself because I don't love most of the pre-shredded cheese out there--but that's not always the most convenient. I love that skirt! I don't wear as many skirts and dresses when it's cold out, but I love wearing them in the spring and summer!

    1. I hate shredding my own cheese but I agree- most pre-shredded options compromise on taste. You should definitely try Tillamook!

    1. Thank you! I do enjoy wearing them once I have them...it's just the process of finding ones that are the right length and cut that is tiring! LOL.

  9. i love dresses for the one and done factor, but rarely wear skirts (occasionally work skirts, but that's it). that one is super cute on you so i'm glad you gave it a shot! i saw that cheese on your instagram and keep meaning to try it. there is a sharp cheddar at home that i love and can't find the equivalent here, but i keep trying.

  10. I love this outfit Gina! That skirt is so cute on, especially paired with the denim jacket. I'm really looking forward to the hatch collective coffee chat! I'm nervous to try my hand at networking. I hate talking about myself, and I get so easily flustered but part of my bucket list this Summer is to put myself out there more socially. At least you'll be there so we can catch up in person too!

  12. I'm with you, Gina, skirts and I don't get along very well together. I've always had difficulties finding the most flattering length, and pairing it with a top that looks just right. So I've sort of given up. For now GRIN you, on the other hand, shouldn't stop because that skirt looks so fresh and charming on you.
