Three Spring Staples

|
Something I've noticed about my sale shopping habits (and that I'm trying to correct) is that I tend to get tempted by cute things just because they're on sale...but ultimately those pieces don't really stand the test of time. I don't mind getting a couple of trendier pieces each season, but if I do it every time there's a big sale it's bad news for my budget and my closet. So today instead of sharing a collage of cute things I would love to get during the remaining Easter sales and tempting myself in the process, I'm sharing a few pieces that have been worthwhile purchases that really did stand the test of time.

Lace Trim Cami:
This cami from Abercrombie comes in lots of colors, though I've been good about just sticking to black and white for myself since I know I can layer those the most easily. It's true to size (I'm wearing an XS in these photos) and has adjustable straps. With the current sale it's only $14, and it's pretty hard to beat that price for a closet staple.

Khaki Bomber Jacket:
This jacket from Express is a perfect neutral shade and a nice medium weight with some good stretch to make it comfortable for movement. It's 40% off through today, true to size and I'm wearing an XS here.
ONE: Jacket | White Tee | Similar Jeans | Similar Ankle Boots | Bag (Exact color sold out)
THREE: Jacket | Tee | Jeans | Ankle Boots | Handbag (Exact color sold out)

Camo Jeans:
For some reason I didn't wear these camo jeans as much during the winter (maybe it's the cropped length?), but now that temps are rising again I'm ready to pull them back out of hibernation. Not all camo prints are created equal, but these are just right. They're true to size (at 5'4" I'm wearing the Short length) and have just enough stretch for comfort, but they hold up well with wear throughout the day and through multiple washes. I do hang them to dry rather than putting them in the dryer, but I do that with all my jeans. They're under $50 right now with current sale pricing.
ONE: Similar Jacket | Similar Tee | Camo Jeans  | Handbag (c/o) | Shoes (c/o) | Necklace

I do have a couple of things on my wishlist right now but I'm taking my time deciding if I think they're the type of pieces that will end up being closet staples or current fads that don't survive the next round of closet clean-outs. It's hard to predict sometimes, but doing posts like this really help me analyze that criteria before I make a purchase.

  1. Love this post and the reason why I have so much stuff on ebay is for this exact same behavior. That's a really thoughtful post :) You buy things because the price is so good but end up not wearing them much and spending money.
I didn't get anything this time around because I splurged on an item I've been wanting for months, so I wasn't really tempted.

  2. Oh yes, I fall for the sale all the time and you're right about them not always standing the test of time in my closet. That lace trim cami is a fabulous closet staple and a great price. I'm really trying to reign in my spending this month. Fingers crossed!

  4. I love all of your Spring picks, especially that bomber! I love layering jackets like that over everything as a way to tie an outfit together and make it look extra polished. The lace cami is essential too - can’t live without them!

    1. Thanks Noelle! I do love a cute jacket and regret not wearing them a little more often lately. Then again, I needed a little more warmth in the winter anyway!

  5. These are all great staples. I love the philosophy of pieces that go from year to year, but there are so many times that I totally fall into the "it's cute and/or "it's on sale" trap. I going back to your Marie Kondo post to tackle the clutter in my closet (for good hopefully!).

    1. Ha, right now I'm having bitter feelings about Marie's method because I think I got too aggressive with it last fall. Sometimes clothes and shoes are very useful even when they don't "spark joy!"

  6. Great helpful post! I am taking another chance on the jacket. The denim one worked out great!

  7. I think I have been shopping so much less this season that I’m acting out by buying all the things this past week in preparation for warm weather!!!! #oops But you are right that trends can be super disposable!
I love that Express jacket on you! It looks like the perfect go-to for every outfit!

  8. This is a great idea, because I'm definitely guilty of picking up things just because they're a good deal too. I think all of these are great pieces. I think I'd get a lot of use out of those camis, I love that the straps are adjustable too!

    1. I am sure all of us have fallen victim to the "but it's on sale!" justification now and then. :)
