Back to Basics + April Update

|
Today's outfit is about as basic as it gets: a T-shirt and jeans. Of course, I like to add some accessories to help make the outfit look a little less plain, but it's still a pretty simple, casual look. There's not a lot to say about an outfit like this, so luckily it's the last Wednesday of the month which gives me an excuse to join up with some other bloggers in writing a bit more about things other than what I'm wearing!
T-Shirt | Jeans | Shoes (c/o) | Belt | Bag (c/o Shopbop) Budget Bag Option | Bracelet | Earrings | Coin Necklace

These Madewell T-shirts have been a staple for me for a few years now. They're true to size (I'm wearing XS), and in addition to this grey version, I also own the black, white and striped version (under a separate listing but it's the same t-shirt) and I use them year-round on their own or layered with jackets. I personally don't layer these with cardigans as much because I find that a more open v-neck or a wider scoop neck is more flattering on me with cardigans.  I do see other bloggers wearing these with cardigans and they look good, but it just doesn't work for me. I can't really explain the reason or logic behind it (if there is any!), but it's just something I've learned about my own preference through trial and error.

T-Shirt | Jeans | Shoes (c/o) | Belt | Bag (c/o Shopbop) Budget Bag Option | Bracelet | Earrings | Coin Necklace

My jeans are true to size, as well as my belt and shoes. The heel on these shoes is a very comfortable height and I had no trouble doing plenty of walking in them. And even though they have a lot of straps on the front, they have a zipper up the back so they're easy to get on and off. My necklace is this exact version, I just separated it into two necklaces since I thought I would get more use out of it that way.  I did have to add a few extra links to get the longer section to the length I wanted, but that was an easy adjustment. You can see the longer segment (post-modification) in the third outfit here. It's marked way down to $22.50 and it's well worth the money even if you have to pay the $5 shipping fee. Two necklaces for under $30 is pretty hard to beat!

April Update
Today I'm joining What's Up Wednesday for an end of the month, behind-the-blog life update. I already answered the "What I Wore" part of the prompt with today's outfit, but you can view the rest of the questions here, or just read on while I answer a few of their questions about life lately.

What I'm eating this week:
Does it count as "Avocado Toast" if you use pre-packaged guacamole? If not, then I guess I'm having Guacamole Toast for breakfast lately. I wanted a break from eggs so I bought some Trader Joe's Chunky Spicy Guacamole and I like it for a fast and flavorful meal on a piece of wheat toast.

What I'm reminiscing about:
My family has not stopped talking about how much we loved our trip to Zion National Park. I recapped it here and can't recommend it enough as a vacation destination for anyone.

What I've been up to:
Aside from the usual family life and blogging stuff, last month I worked on a style update for the front office workers in my brother's dental office. He treated his front office staff to several new outfits and asked me to help them shop and put together some nice, professional looks. It was a fun and challenging project! Fun because the ladies were great to work with, and obviously shopping on someone else's dime (even though the clothes weren't for me personally) is fun! Ha! But it's also challenging to make recommendations for people you've never met in person and it took us a lot of ordering and returning to find pieces that worked for them in real life vs. what looked good online. It also required me to do a lot of browsing and ordering from places where I don't usually shop since I don't have a need for professional attire, so it was fun to expand my horizons that way. I've been debating whether and how to share more about this project on the blog or on the newsletter I intend to start someday, so let me know if it's something that interests you or if you're content with my usual casual style.

What I'm working on:
On the blog/Instagram front, I'm trying to add some (hopefully) useful content to my Instagram highlights, starting with Book Reviews. After that I'm hoping to add a highlight section for the Designer Dupe content I've put together. I'm also working on a request I had for a round up/collage of Designer Dupe sunglasses for the blog. I shared a bunch of sunglasses on my Instagram stories back in January, but I need to put them into a blog post for easier, long-term reference.

Of course, if you're a blog reader and not so much into Instagram you can access the same content just as easily from the search bar (on the right hand side of my page at the moment) or from the Navigation Menu up top. e.g. For Book Reviews go to Categories then scroll down to Book Reviews.

What I'm dreading:
I've officially decided to grow my hair out a little bit, so I'm dreading the next year or so of awkward hair stages. I skipped my last haircut and it's already getting unmanageable. I think my hair might have to be styled up with various extensions like it is in today's post for the foreseeable future!

What I'm excited about:
Upcoming visits with friends! These days it's difficult to find enough schedule overlap to get together even with my local friends, but I do have a couple of things on the calendar in the next couple of weeks. I'm finding more and more these days I have to deliberately plan things well in advance if I want them to happen. Do you all have the same experience or do you have a lot of friends who are able to make things happen spontaneously?

What I'm watching:
We're still slowly making our way through Silicon Valley. (Just my husband and I - this show is definitely not kid friendly.) Dancing with the Stars starts also starts on Monday, April 30 and I love watching that. This season's cast is all professional athletes so I think that will make for an interesting dynamic. (Full cast announcement is here.)

What I'm Reading:
I'm a little over halfway through The Last Thing She Ever Did by Gregg Olsen and really enjoying it. I'm also listening to My Story by Elizabeth Smart on Audiobook. Quite a few people commented that they really enjoyed her book when I posted about it on Instagram and I'm only a few chapters in but so far so good. (Well...I mean what happens is terrible but it's holding my interest so that's good.)

What I'm listening to:
If I want to listen to music while I'm doing something on the computer I always use our family's Google Play music account. It's been awhile since we switched over to this from Spotify, but I think we found it the cheapest for us all to be able to access it and listen to what we want, when we want, even if it's at the same time as someone else.

Bonus Question: Share some of your favorite Mother's Day Gift Ideas
I usually forget to do the bonus question, but not this time! Many of my go-to gifts, including several things I've given my mom over the years, can be found in this post. My siblings and I usually collaborate on a Mother's Day Gift, and there are nine of us so a little contribution from each of us goes a long way! We often do flowers (I use Proflowers if I'm in charge of ordering), but we've also done treats liked chocolate dipped strawberries from Shari's Berries. Our mom's very favorite thing is traveling to see her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, so we've also done lots of Visa Gift Cards to help her keep the travel costs down.

Wow, I guess I balanced out having not a lot to say about my outfit by having a lot to say about everything else! Thanks for making it to the end and have a great rest of your week!

  1. Oh getting a chance to be a stylist sounds like a lot of fun - would definitely love to hear more about that side of things on your blog :)

I love this classic outfit too - you can't beat jeans and a tee sometimes! :)

Thank you for the link up!

Hope you are having a nice week so far! It's a good one for me as we have a day off here and I'm planning to relax a little, as much as the kids allow, ha! :)

  2. I think a tee and jeans is a great look when you add accessories just like you did here - they really make the outfit! Love the belt!
What fun -style makeovers for your brother's staff! I bet they loved it! I know what you mean about the difficulty dressing people you don't know very well. Last year one of my mom friends asked me to help her shop and it was fun but also difficult. She's pretty conservative and a different body type than mine and she has a corporate job. I was able to get her to put some different colors together but it was more challenging than I thought it would be. But I do love shopping on someone else's dime!
    Have a great one Gina!

    1. Thank you Kelly! So glad you can relate to the challenges of dressing someone else! Taste is very personal, and I'm only used to dressing my own body and knowing what flatters me!

  4. I am always on the lookout for a great-fitting tee shirt so I'm going to check out Madewell for sure. That sounds like fun to shop and style the women at your brother's office! I'm sure it was a challenge but I bet they loved the experience as much as you did!
I am definitely a planner and have a lot more luck spending time with friends when we make plans in advance.

    1. Good to know I am not alone in the friends/planning situation! And definitely give these t-shirts a try next time you need a new one!

  5. I haven't tried Madewell shirts so I will have to give them a try next time I need tees! I've tried Everlane and liked those too. They are great if you prefer ones without pockets and mine have held up pretty well over time. I would love to see more about your styling project. It sounds challenging, but like a lot of fun!

    1. Thank you for the feedback, Laura! And yes, sometimes I do prefer a no-pocket tee so that's good to know about Everlane t-shirts. Thanks for the tip!

  6. When paired with a great pair of shoes, I think it's hard to go wrong with the classic jeans + tee!

And what a fun project to help some ladies pick out outfits that are being gifted to them! I tend toward casual style as well, since I don't need office attire either, but I absolutely love any kind of before + after type of post, so that could be a fun way to share :)

    1. Thanks Anne! Unfortunately we didn't take before/after photos so I wouldn't really be able to do that. :( It would mainly have to be talking through the process and sharing the style sets I built + what they ended up choosing.

  7. Styling your brother's office sounds like so much fun! Also, how lucky are they to get a few things to wear from their employer, he sounds like a great boss! I need to get my hands on a madewell tee, I live for good tees!

  8. So many things to talk about! First, I need a couple basic tees in my life so I'll definitely check out the madewell ones. I think I saw some at my Nordstrom Rack! And I can't wait to see how your hair process goes! I've been trying to grow mine out too and it's much harder than I thought! I think I'm just accustomed to having shoulder length hair so the growing out process is a bit painful LOL. The way you wear your hair back though is perfect to solve this and I'm sure it'll be easier for you than you think!

    1. Oh yeah, I do remember you saying you were going to grow your hair out! At least it's already wayyy longer than mine! Ha! And I never thought to check the rack for these t-shirts. Thanks for the tip!

  10. Wow, one of nine. My mom is one of ten making me one of 29 grandchildren on one side of the family and only 1 cousin on the other...LOL. Not very even distribution, but I love having a lot of cousins. You look great in a tee and jeans, Gina!!! Good luck with the hair growing out. I'm trying to let a little length get back on mine too...it is a pain, especially when it looks so dry. UGH! You're in good company! XO

  13. I won't say basic, Gina, I'd say classic :) and nothing quite beats a chic, classic look like tee and jeans, I tell ya!! And how fun, being a stylist. I've dreamed of doing that myself, perhaps one day xo
