Blue Striped Sweater + March Update

|
I really didn't intend to post two outfits this similar back-to-back, but that's just the way the picture situation worked out around here. If you missed it, I shared another striped sweater and jeans combo on Monday, although I actually wore these outfits about a week apart in real life. Both times it was for a weekend day packed with family-on-the-go activities. I guess it makes sense though that when I'm doing similar activities, I reach for similar outfits.

This sweater is a thin, lightweight option suitable for nicer Spring weather. It's "One Size" and for this piece that means XS-Small. For a similar sweater with more sizes try this one from H&M. I had to wear a cami under mine for warmth and modesty since it's a little sheer. I thought the contrasting tie-details on the sleeves were cute and fun, though in all honesty they got in the way of most anything I tried to do with my hands. The sleeves were also a bit longer than I expected and with the split at the wrist there's really no way to shorten, fold or cuff them. I've really made an effort to avoid "fussy" clothes this year, and overall this sweater doesn't meet that "non-fussy" standard because of the sleeves. But I still think it's cute and it's tolerable, so now that it's already in my possession, I'm sure I can find a few more occasions to wear it! I just want to be as candid as possible about the realities of wearing this piece in real life so you all can make the right purchase decision for yourselves.

My Express Jeans are true to size and at 5'4" I prefer the Short length. These Target boots are currently on a BOGO 50% off sale and have been getting put to good use this Spring (see other outfits with these here and here). I got my normal size and I really wish I had purchased a half-size down since they're slightly too big. They're okay with socks, but since they're perforated they're probably not meant to be worn that way. My exact bag is currently on backorder at Nordstrom. For a budget-friendly option I like this Amazon option.

My white leather earrings are the 2" size, which is currently sold out. The same Etsy shop also has this white option available in the same size I'm wearing (I kind of wish I had seen those before I bought mine because I really like the quilted detail!). This silver locket also doubles as an essential oils diffuser. I haven't experimented with that functionality since I only got it for the length and filigree look of the medallion, not the diffuser function. But if you're into essential oils that might be a bonus feature, plus it's only $15.

March Update:
Today I'm joining What's Up Wednesday for an end of the month, behind-the-blog life update. You can view the prompt questions for this post here, or just read on to find a little about what's been going on around here lately. I always love a good prompt to give me an excuse to share more than just clothes!

What I'm eating this week:
I made these Healthy Breakfast Cookies for breakfast this week and they were pretty good. I knew I had some rushed mornings on the schedule with no time to sit down and eat so I prepared these in advance. They're not as delicious as real cookies of course, but I liked them enough to keep the recipe for future needs. The rest of my family wasn't all that into them, so just don't expect to make them and plan on tricking your family into thinking they are real cookies! I made a couple of substitutions based on what I had in my pantry, so I used butter instead of coconut oil (I know...not exactly "healthy" but it's a pretty small amount for the entire recipe compared to regular cookies) and Honey Nut Cheerios instead of Multi-Grain.

What I'm working on:
When I posted my Reader Survey results in February, I said I wasn't going to do a Newsletter any time soon. Well...I guess I should say "soon" is a relative word. I can't seem to get the Newsletter idea out of my head. I think it's just going to be one of those things I have to try for myself to know whether it works for me or not. I have been working on researching different service providers for it, brainstorming and organizing content ideas, etc. I don't think it will be ready especially soon, but I really would like to try it in 2018.

What I'm watching:
My husband and I have been watching Silicon Valley on Netflix. It didn't exactly grab us at first (and I really don't think it will be everyone's cup of tea), but by the end of the first season it gave us enough laughs and developed enough stories/characters to keep us watching.

What I'm reading:
I just finished The Dry by Jane Harper and I thought it was pretty good.  Now I'm reading Trespassing by Brandi Reeds. It's holding my interest but the main character annoys me. I think I've read too many novels lately where a husband is keeping a bunch of secrets from his wife in plain sight, but she doesn't ever get suspicious or look into his shady explanations until it's too late. I don't know about you all, but most women I know aren't that trusting!

What I'm dreading:
Last month, Kristen and I chose Homegoing for our joint read/review in April. It has great reviews, but when I posted about it in my March book reviews I got some comments about it that made me not so sure about reading it. So now I'm worried I won't like it and dreading getting started!

What I'm listening to:
My current Audiobook is Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss. So far it's pretty good and has some useful ideas, though it probably won't become an all-time favorite.

What I'm doing this weekend:
Besides chauffeuring my kids around, we'll be having a casual Easter gathering on Sunday. I love to bake but for health reasons I'm trying to limit it to birthdays and holidays only, so this weekend is fair game. I'm planning to try these Caramel Rum Cupcakes for the adults. For a kid-friendly cupcake, my very favorite recipe is one I saved from a Paula Deen magazine years ago. Luckily another blogger tried it and loved it enough to transcribe it to her site here.

What I'm looking forward to next month:
Spring Break! We have a fun family trip planned for mid-April and I can't wait. It's been awhile since we've traveled anywhere as a family and it just feels like we're all ready for a break and change of pace and scenery.

    1. Thanks Rachelle! I didn't think I could really wear yellow but in this case it's no problem! Ha!

  2. I feel ya on the book front - your comment about the main character annoying you - I keep reading books along those same lines. Husbands keeping secrets yada, yada, yada and I want to scream! I guess I need to look into a different genre but I love mystery and suspense! I just finished reading Liars on Sunday and it was pretty good.
Your rum cupcakes sound like a great idea for Easter!
Love the striped sweater on you Gina - you look great in stripes!

    1. Ugh, yes. It is a common plot feature in mystery/suspense novels. It would be fine if they made the husband reasonably good at keeping secrets! LOL.

  3. Ohh, you're right! The contrasting colors make this sweater extra cute (and I'm already a sucker for anything with stripes! Thanks for linking-up with The Blended Blog.

    1. LOL, I've determined they can't possibly mean "one size fits all." They have to mean "we only carry One Size." Lost in translation! LOL.

  5. I have a similar sweater and the sleeves are a little fussy, but I like to wear it sometimes still. I love the contrasting color on yours! It's really fun! I'd love to know how those cupcakes go. They sound delicious!

    1. Yeah, I can work around it. I just have to remember to push up the sleeves before I start washing dishes or something like that.

  8. I love that sweater and what draws me to it is the sleeves, but I totally see how they would get in the way of everything. I'm not much for fussy clothes either. I'm always looking for ideas for breakfasts I can make ahead over the weekend so I'll have to check out those "cookies" (and maybe since they're healthy I won't have to share, ha!).

  9. That is a cute sweater on you. I agree with you that the ties on the sleeves look cool but aren't exactly great for everyday life. Vacations are always a good thing - to get away from "life" for a little bit and just be able to relax. Have a great Wednesday!

  10. Such a cute striped sweater and so perfect for spring! Thanks for sharing the link for the earrings - I will definitely be ordering some. I read The Dry last year and really enjoyed it. I am currently listening to Little Fires Everywhere and it has been good.

    1. This is my third pair of earrings from this vendor and I love them! I liked Little Fires Everywhere, too! Not as much as everyone else (it was on so many Best Book lists!), but I did enjoy it.

  16. Thank you for the honesty about the sweater. The ties immediately caught my attention and I was thinking they’re so cute, but I can totally see how they would get in the way and would probably drive me crazy! We’re going on a spring break trip too, next week, I can’t wait!

  18. Stripes are always a good idea in my opinion! Your breakfast cookies sound good to me. I keep thinking I need to try something like this as I usually eat a store bought bar. I know making something would be healthier, but also harder on my end. I'm lazy, ha! You are inspiring me. Sounds like you have fun Easter plans.

    1. That's how I feel...a little added butter was better to me than all the added preservatives in something store bought. It won't become my everyday favorite but it was just what I needed this week.

  19. The sleeves on your top are so cute! I am loving anything yellow for Spring so of course I think the pop is unexpected and cute! I can see how they would get in the way though. I really am dying to go on a trip! I've been feeling desperate for adventure lately ;)
