Five Ways to Wear Red + Link Up

|
Although I really do like red, I tend to wear it most often as an accessory. It's such a bold, attention-grabbing color, and my tastes are usually a little more neutral and subdued. That said, the right shade of red can be very flattering so I'll get a bold streak now and then (funny but this usually happens around Christmas, Valentine's or the 4th of July...) and pick up something red. Today I'm teaming up with four of my blogger friends to share how we wear red. More often than not, I wear red with a hefty dose of black, just like this outfit I wore for dinner with friends last weekend:

Outfit Details: First, since we're talking red, this red top from Target is a fun little piece for under $25. On the model on the website I actually thought it looked a bit short so I was worried about the length, but she must have a longer torso than me (I'm 5'4") because this is plenty long for me. It runs true to size and I'm wearing an XS here.

My love for moto jackets is no secret around here, but I really cannot believe how good this one is for only $31! I'm wearing a Small here, and I think the sizing is normal for SheIn/Romwe pieces, but if you're new to ordering from them I typically wear one size up from what I wear at Target, Gap, Express, or LOFT. For more of my tips and tricks on shopping at SheIn/Romwe see this post. I've had both hits and misses there, but this jacket is definitely a hit. The quality is probably slightly lower than Express moto jackets (and less than half the price of their jackets so there's that) but as good as similar jackets I've tried from Target or Kohl's.

My black ripped-knee jeans run true to size and are marked down to $35 at the time I'm writing this! Sometimes sales and promotions end/change by the time my post goes live, but these do go on sale fairly often and I love this pair as well as the non-ripped knee black pair in the same style.  My nude stacked heel pumps are also true to size, though I did have to add a little heel pad to the back to keep them from slipping off when I walk. I tried this outfit with black pumps too and I thought those worked just as well as the nude...it was really just personal preference and I liked the idea of breaking up the black a little more.

And although it doesn't require any sizing or fit info, I should also note that this black Rebecca Minkoff clutch was a Christmas gift from Caryl and I'm loving it! The strap is detachable so you can carry it as a clutch, but I opted to use it as a crossbody since I'm always afraid I'll set my clutch down and lose it, spill on it, etc.

Four of my favorite blogger friends are styling red in their posts today too so I hope you'll stop by their blogs as well to get some outfit inspo on styling red. We didn't plan to coordinate anything other than red but we ended up with a great mix dressy-to-casual looks so hopefully there's something for everyone!

January Update
On the last Wednesday of the month I usually do a behind-the-blog update here on some random things in life beyond, "here's what I wore and how it fits." I missed December entirely thanks to the holiday craziness I guess, so it feels like it's been forever since I've done one of these! I debated whether to bring it back at all but since some of you may be new visitors from some of my friends' blogs today this might be a good way for you to get to know a little more about me to see if we connect beyond clothes!

What I'm loving:
Books! Last year I added monthly book review posts to the blog (you can find them under the navigation bar up top under Categories > Book Reviews) and it's been so fun connecting to others through reading. I've read several books I really enjoyed this month, and they'll be in my next round of reviews on Tuesday, February 13. Also, if you love book deals,  and now I have a backlog of several books to read thanks to sale purchases. But I'm spending a less on books overall, which is great since it all adds up!

What I'm reading:
Speaking of books, I'm currently reading The Fault in Our Stars. I'm late to the game on this one and I haven't seen the movie either, but since the book was on sale (thanks to Kristen for always posting the best deals on her Instagram stories!) I decided to see what the the fuss was about. Everyone has warned me it's sad and I'm about halfway through and finding that to be 100% accurate. Yet it is still really good and entertaining!

What I'm working on:
Well, up until this post goes live I'm working on this post and the collaboration! One of my objectives for the blog this year is to do more collaborations like this with other bloggers. They're great for building connections (which is one of the best parts of blogging) and helpful for growth. So it's win-win, it's just a matter of putting in a little extra time to make it all happen.

What I've been up to:
Outside of blog stuff has been a lot of mom life stuff, per usual. We had the middle school Spelling Bee this week and my oldest won his classroom Bee to qualify for the school finals. I've been using any spare minute to quiz him on words...many of which I had to look up first (e.g. lichenous, coquelicot, and frontispiece) to figure out how to pronounce!

What I'm doing this weekend:
The first Sunday of every month is my girlfriends brunch so I'm looking forward to catching up with my friends that I hardly ever get to see otherwise! We each take turns choosing the location, and my turn's not coming until April again but I'm already trying to think of a new place to try. If you have a favorite brunch spot in San Diego let me know!

  1. I love this look. So chic! I bawled all the way thru Fault in our Stars, but it is so well written, I enjoyed it for that. The movie... eh. I don't know. The book is way better. (But isn't that what they always say?)

    1. Ha, it's true, I don't think I've ever heard someone say they liked the movie better. I finished it last night and I agree - I loved the writing! Sounds like I will skip the movie though!

  8. I feel exactly the same way about the color red! I have a few red things, but feel more comfortable wearing it as an accessory. I am always willing to try it though! I love seeing this collaboration. You all styled red in such fun ways!

    1. Thank you so much Laura! When I do wear red...I wonder why I don't wear it more often! But then I kind of run out of ways to style it (where I'm comfortable, anyway) so it seems pointless to have a lot of it!

  9. spelling bee finals, that's so awesome. Yea I can only pronounce coquelicot because that's a french word. Red looks great on you, perfect contrast with your skintone. Love that you look is edgy too.

    1. There were quite a few words of French origin on the list (e.g. tete a tete, monsieur, piece de resistance...pardon the lack of accent marks!) so you would have done very well! LOL.

  13. i agree about red- i always feel like i'm screaming look at me when i wear it, but some people really rock it.
you'll have to let me know if you watch the fault in our stars movie. i remember not crying very much, which is very unlike me - i am a crier lol.
omg those spelling words. i have literally never heard of them haha, wouldn't know how to pronounce them either!

    1. I'm glad I wasn't alone in not knowing the words! I really cannot see myself watching the movie version of Fault. I know my family won't enjoy it and if I have time to watch my own movie, I don't think I want it to be a sad one!

  14. I usually do red in shoes and bags as an accent, but I do love red! It's such a power color, and I think it really does make you feel more outgoing when you wear it!

I wish I could have participated in this collaboration because they are one of my favorite parts of blogging too! I would love to do more with you Gina :)

Have you been anywhere in Little Italy for brunch? Davanti Enoteca is good! Katie goes there all the time.
