What's Up August + Link Up | On the Daily EXPRESS

What's Up August + Link Up

Today I'm joining What's Up Wednesday for an end of the month, behind-the-blog life update (along with hosting Style on the Daily Linkup with Amy Ann, as usual!). You can view the prompt questions for this post here, or just read on to find out what's been going on around here lately.

What I'm wearing:
This top is a new favorite. I wore it last week and shared it in my Outfit Recap post, then I wore again over the weekend with shorts.
Top: Express | Shorts: Abercrombie | Sandals: Target | Bag: c/o Amazon

It's true-to-size, soft, stretchy and comfortable. It also comes in a pretty blush shade too. It's an easy piece to dress up or down and transition to fall with a layer. Here's how I wore it last week, plus a outfit options for a more dressed-up look or a layered look for cooler weather:
ONE:  Top | Jeans | Shoes (c/o)
THREE: Top | Jacket | Jeans | Shoes

What I've been up to:
Back-to-School season has me running all over town. Getting all of the correct supplies (Middle School seems to have more specific, harder-to-find requirements), clothes, backpacks, shoes, and band instruments has required a lot of in-store selection. Plus, to volunteer in schools in California you have to get a Tuberculosis test every four years! Do any other states do that? In Washington State that was not required to help out in school. Anyway, as the world's okay-est school volunteer I had to redo my TB test last week (a two-part ordeal) since it just expired.

What I'm working on:
Aside from the everyday family/mom life stuff, the blog is the main thing I feel like I'm "working on" right now. I'm trying to incorporate actual posed and photographed outfit photos (like this), and it's taking some additional planning and coordination since it's not a part of my regular routine yet. I also just purchased a "real" camera! I have no idea how to use it yet so I need to work on that, too. So I guess you could say I am finally working on improving my blog photography. If you've endured/not complained about my phone pictures thus far thanks for that!

What I'm eating:
ICYMI on my Instagram Story, I made chocolate cake with Oreo frosting for my son's birthday.
I used this Chocolate Cake Recipe + this Oreo Frosting Recipe for the final product. I've made the chocolate cake quite a few times before and I prefer it with chocolate frosting myself, but the kids liked it this way and the frosting was the birthday boy's favorite part, so no regrets!

What I'm Watching:
My husband and I recently started watching Better Call Saul on Netflix. It's a spinoff based on one of the characters from Breaking Bad (which we loved) and so far we're liking this too. As a family, we also watched the movie McFarland, USA last weekend and really enjoyed that.

What I'm Reading:
My August Book Reviews are in this post, and my current read is The Heavens May Fall by Allen Eskens. I liked both of his other books and so far so good with this one.

What I'm Listening to:
My current audiobook is Talent is Overrated (What Really Separates World Class Performers from Everyone Else). A couple of reviews on this said that it made for a good follow-up to Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell, which is one of my favorite non-fiction books this year. So far I would agree...it does feel like a closer look at some of the topics Gladwell touched. It's not quite as engaging as Outliers, but that could be partly due to the narration. This narrator is a bit more dry, and Malcolm Gladwell really draws me in with his reading style.

What I'm Looking Forward to Next Month:
We just booked a mini trip to Arizona in mid-September. We'll be hanging out at the pool as one last summer hurrah, and hopefully squeezing in a quick visit with some of my extended family members there as well.

What I'm Doing this Weekend:
Shopping the Labor Day Sales! If history is any indication, Express will likely do a storewide 40% off sale Friday through Monday. I stopped in store earlier this week to tried on a few things to help narrow down my selection, and I'll share my fitting room reviews here on the blog this Friday.  I found some great pieces that I'm excited to share here and purchase for myself, so I hope you'll stop by on Friday and check it out!

  7. Yay for one last Summer trip! That sounds like the perfect send-off. And I can't wait to see/hear your thoughts on Express Fall items. I really hope the sale is good this weekend because I have at least two things in my cart (possibly more after your Friday post)

  8. BTW, I remember how nervous I was when I transitioned my blog photography from mirror selfies to having a Canon and Nate take them for me out in the world! It was super scary, and it still can be when there are people staring at us. But ultimately, it's worth it. I think you'll be happy with the results!

  9. Oh man! How have I not even thought about Labor Day sales???! Crazy! Not that I need to buy a single thing. And that dessert looks freaking amazing. I'm salivating just typing about it! I always admire how you get everything done with your busy life. Taking care of all your stuff plus everyone else's!! I can barely manage myself! Always inspires me!
    And Arizona sounds perfect!
