Tuesday Talk

|
Today is one of those days where I don't have one specific topic to share that seems worthy of an entire post. But I do have few scattered ideas that I'm just going to lump together and go with it. So in no particular order, here are a few things on my blogging brain lately.

1. Pajama Day

Over the (long) summer here I kind of forgot how comfortable fall outfits can be. A soft sweater or sweatshirt and leggings like this outfit I recently shared on Insta makes me feel like I'm in pajamas and a blanket all day.
Sweater: Express (Similar under $30) / Tank: Target / Leggings: Express / Necklace: Kendra Scott / Booties: Express / Bag: Amazon / Ring: Express / Nails: Essie "Bahama Mama"

It's no secret that when I find an outfit formula that works for me, I love repeating it, so this "pajama day" outfit combination has been happening quite a bit lately with slight variations in color, etc.:
ONE:
Sweater: Express (Similar under $30) / Tank: TargetLeggings: ExpressNecklace: Kendra ScottBooties: Express

TWO:
Sweater: Express (Similar under $30) / Tank: TargetLeggings: ExpressNecklace: Kendra ScottBooties: Forever 21

THREE:
Sweater: ExpressTank: TargetLeggings: ExpressNecklace: Kendra Scott (c/o) / Boots: Target (Similar)

FOUR:
Sweatshirt: Express / Tank: Target / Leggings: Express / Converse: Nordstrom

On the leggings subject, I recently saw this meme and it cracks me up:

And it's really too bad I don't wear vests because I love Star Wars! I quote Han Solo all the time ("Punch it, Chewy!"), so dressing like him sounds right up my alley considering some of my past posts where I got outfit inspiration from men like David Beckham, Bruno Mars, or Jay-Z.

2. Same Outfit, Five Days

If you like outfit remixing and capsule wardrobes, you'll probably enjoy this article I stumbled onto not long ago called, "I Wore the Same Outfit Every Day for 5 Days." I doubt I would ever actually do something like this in real life, but it's a fun way to get inspired to use what you already own.

3. Nail Hell

I don't know if it's the change in the weather or what, but for the last few weeks my nail polish has only been lasting 2 days vs. the 3-5 days I was getting when I initially started using Essie Gel Setter top coat. Or maybe it's just that I notice the slightest chip more now that I'm wearing darker Fall colors? I don't know but it's annoying to deal with so much maintenance. If you have a favorite base coat or top coat or any nail tip that gives you a longer lasting manicure let me know in the comments!

Sweater: Express / Cami: ExpressNecklace: Kendra Scott / Jeans: Express / Booties: Express / Bag: Amazon / Nails: Essie "Bahama Mama" (Lasted two days. Boo.)

4. Splits + Flexibility Training

#lifegoals (Image source along with another good article about training to do the splits)

A few weeks back (in this post) I explained how and why I am attempting to train myself to do the splits after getting some motivation from this article. A few of you have expressed interest in a similar goal so I wanted to update you on my progress and a few other things I've learned along the way. For one thing, I've learned that I can do the splits. It just takes me about twenty minutes total to get into them between warming up and gradually relaxing into them through a series of stretches and deep breathing. I'm hoping in time I can keep increasing my flexibility to where it doesn't take quite so long to get there.

That said, I recently read this Cathe article "Does Stretching Increase Flexibility?" and it was simultaneously insightful and discouraging. Cliffs Notes version: it takes a lot of work to increase flexibility and stretching doesn't do as much as you think. I'll keep working on it and per her article I plan to add more dynamic stretches into the mix to see if that helps.

5. As Seen on TV

I don't watch a lot of TV but when I do, I can't help but notice if someone is wearing something from Express. Like last week on Dancing with the Stars:

I'm almost positive Pro dancer Lindsay Arnold was wearing the Chevron Metal Bracelet (in store only now) that I also own:

And Carylee messaged me with another sighting of Express stuff on TV, from a Payless Shoes commercial:
(See the commercial on YouTube

The girl on the right is definitely wearing the Double Windowpane Barcelona Cami (in stores only now) and the Berry Moto Jacket that Carylee and I styled eight different ways (including this outfit) between our two blogs here and here.
Jacket: ExpressNecklace: ExpressTank: Old Navy / Jeans: Nordstrom / Shoes: Sole Society (Similar) / Ring: Kendra Scott (c/o) Bag: Amazon

  1. I so noticed that jacket in that payless commercial. I've been using opi infinite shine top-base coats and the polish and I'm getting 4-5 with zero to minimal chip. Loving it! The only downside you have to use their polish so I've been wearing the same 6 all the time.
I can't do the split yet, but I've not train on it for 20 minutes straight so maybe I need more practice.

  2. I agree, there is nothing better to wear in the fall than leggings and a cozy cardigan! That Hans Solo graphic is so funny! I'm so envious that you are able to do the splits! I've never been flexible but you've inspired me to try it!

  3. Your random talk posts are always the best. I love your pajama look. (There are some weekend days, I actually do wear my pajama pants all day long). You make it look so polished. Nails? CND Vinylux. I'm always pissed if I try to wear something else, even if I try to put the CND top coat on. That and keeping them really short. Car seats are the bane of my manicured existence. That is an interesting article on flexibility and I'm impressed by anyone who can work on one pose for twenty minutes. Flexibility, especially in the hips, is something I really need to work on. Finally, I love the Hans Solo graphic. Yes, you should do an outfit inspiration. Would it be possible to do the entire Star Wars cast? Hans was definitely the most fashionable.

  5. If only you could see my pajama day today..you would be ashamed haha! I put it up on snapchat if you're interested. Super comfortable but not the most glam :) I always had the same issue with nail polish, and the only polish that lasts for me is the Revlon gel polish or even the top coat. I forget the full name, but it's by Revlon. They have a great selection of colors, but I find the topcoat alone works great with any other polish. I also really like the Formula X system.

  6. I love that Han Solo meme!!! As for nail polish, I swear by Sally Hansen Gel nail top coat, it last 5-10 days and I use dark colors too.

  7. Anytime you can feel like you are wearing pjs and look that stylish, life is good. I don't wear leggings much, but you are making me want to do it more. That comic is too funny. I love that you are always on the lookout for Express clothes and that you and Carylee text about it. ;) Your last outfit with the burgundy moto is too good. I love that piece!

  8. I thought I was the only one noticing Express items on TV, thank God I'm not alone! As for my nails, I've always had the issue of my nail polish never lasting longer than 2 days tops before they start chipping. I have recently been using a formula that seems to be working really well, like I can go 5-6 days before a chip even happens and I've been wearing some dark colors so definitely would have noticed. I use OPI Envy as a base coat, any brand nail polish, Essie Gel-Setter, Essie Good to Go and lastly I spray DeMert Nail Dryer (I do both the Essie Good to Go and the spray because I have zero patients when it comes to waiting for my nails to dry).

    1. Thank you so much for these suggestions Tina! I have not tried most of these products so I am putting them on my "to try" list!

  9. I wore " pajamas" most of the weekend too and am loving my leggings! I actually just blogged about it ;)
As for nails, I'm having the same issue! Mine usually last about four days before they really start falling apart. Nothing seems to work. I've tried every base and top coat out there and still I'm left with chipping! I'm tempted to get a gel manicure but stop myself every time because it always ruins my nails and my nails grow too quickly so it ends up being a waste. Not sure what to tell you! I think switching it up between lighter and dark polish is what I'm going to do.

  10. Good morning. I am new to your blog, so please forgive me if this topic has been discussed. I was curious if in fact the tank top you are wearing is the Target Maternity Tank top the link takes me to?. I have to say all of your outfits are ADORABLE and even though I just discovered your site two weeks ago, I have already made a few Express purchases :) So far my favorite fashion blog to date!!

    1. Hi there! First, thank you SO much for your nice comment! And yes, I am in fact wearing a Target maternity tank top. I picked up the tip over a year ago from http://tabanderika.blogspot.com and it's been a game changer for leggings. The Liz Lange tanks don't have any side ruching or maternity other "maternity" details. They're just a nice thick fabric with longer length than a regular tank top. I also actually size up in them. Normally I wear an XS in tops at Express or Target but I like the Small in these maternity tanks when I'm wearing them with leggings because it gives me extra length to make sure everything is covered, and it's still very fitted. It's kind of surprising to be sizing up in a maternity tank of all things but that seems to work best for the look I want. Hope that helps and thanks for reading and commenting!

  11. Ha! Love this post of random thoughts! I don't know why I get so excited when I recognize a piece on TV! I saw someone getting tied up and hit in the head on Criminal Minds wearing my top from Nordstrom, and I felt famous! You have eagle eyes for noticing jewelry! Also- I'm so not surprised you can warm up into the splits! I've noticed before a Pilates class, I bend over and my fingertips touch the floor. An hour later, I can effortless bend over and lay my palms flat on the floor. It's amazing! Now I wanna do the splits!!! And lastly- I love pajama days. I almost wore leggings two days in a row to work but resisted! It's super tempting tho!!

  13. Thank you so much for replying. I was just going to write you and tell you never-mind :). I have had my coffee, woke up and realized I could actually "Search" the topic rather than bug you. I love the tip and will definitely make a trip to Target soon. I look forward to reading your blog, more outfit inspirations and great tips! Thanks again and Happy Holidays!

  14. The random thoughts are fun! I love leggings season. I've been wearing my leggings and my Old Navy poncho and I totally refer to it as my pajama outfit. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

  15. You have got an eye for spotting anything Express! I would have never noticed something like a piece of jewelry! I am the least flexible person I know, my trainer is always telling me how tight I am and how I need to stretch more...it's really pathetic how bad I am LOL. Finally in your pajama look, the olive cardigan caught my eye...it does look super cozy!

  17. I love this random talk post! Some days I wish I could just do something like this, and maybe I need to. First, I love that longer sweater that you are rocking, and I love it in both colors. You always seem to make layered sweaters look so put together and chic. Also, I love that you spotted that bracelet on Dancing with the Stars, I always love seeing things like that and I thought I was the only one who noticed those little things. I saw that meme a few weeks ago and died laughing because it reminded me of almost every girl in college and most girls at the mall!

  19. These random posts are the best. I am looking at my chipped nails right now and am thinking that I really need to redo them but I have a ton of housework to do today so it will have to wait. And I am obsessed with J. Crew so I always notice when someone is wearing it on TV. The Today Show women wear it a lot.

  20. The Han Solo thing is hilarious, I posted it the other day. I'm SUCH a Star Wars fan, it's ridiculous! As far as the nail polish goes, I use the new Essie gel topcoat and I can easily get 3-5 days out of it with zero chipping.

Stopping by from the Pleated Poppy link-up!

  21. Fall fashion is my absolute favourite, just because of how comfy and cozy it is. And ugh... I've all but given up on my nails. Mine chip ridiculously fast, and I have yet to find something that makes them last a decent amount of time.

  22. I absolutely love your outfits!! I'm a fan of express, but only go there when I can splurge a little. Are the leggings at Express of good quality? Like if you bend over they aren't going to expose your underwear? I have a really hard time finding leggings that aren't see through when you stretch them and hold them up to light!

    1. First, thanks for the nice comment! As far as the leggings go, I have owned leggings from two other places: Target and Old Navy. The ones from Express are MUCH nicer. They're thicker (but still soft and comfortable) and not even a little bit see through, even if you hold them up to light. They hold their shape really well and won't expose anything when you bend over. Black Friday is just around the corner and usually everything is 40-50% off so if you're looking for a good bargain you're in luck with your timing!

  25. so i was watching jane the virgin last night and i swear this one girl was wearing a striped portofino, but i could just be imagining it. it was funny though because i totally wasn't paying attention to the scene, just like'is her shirt from express?'
pajama day is my fave. han solo season! i almost spit out my tea. hilarious!
ooh that same outfit 5 days seems interesting, off to check it out.
i wish i had nail help. mine have been shocking lately as well. i was going to try and get my hands on the seche vite or whatever it's called, i used to have it but lost it, and i think it was pretty good.
hmmm about stretching and flexibility. i have noticed that i can do more poses etc in yoga the warmer my body is, but i still can't touch my toes like right off the bat, and i have been trying for like 28 years, so that makes sense. womp womp.
