The Worst and Best of Momstyle

|
I'm a mom of two school age kids, and for the most part they don't say too much about what I wear on a daily basis. I think they're just used to it and it's all "normal" to them. But with Mother's Day coming up, I wanted to do some mom-themed posts so I asked my eight year old to son rate some of my recent Instagram outfits.

My guest outfit critic!

The WORST:

Before I had him look through my Instagram page, I asked if there were any items I wear in general that he didn't like. He didn't skip a beat before listing his top three fashion crimes for his mom:

  1. Jeans with rips in them. One at each knee is okay, but anything more than that is just embarrassing. (Oh boy...)
  2. Pink colored clothing. (Well...I can understand why that's not an eight year old boy's favorite.)
  3. "Pants that were cut into shorts." (Said while looking at my cutoff jean shorts du jour...)
So I knew I was in for it, but on with the selection. These are in no particular order, he just pointed out the ones he didn't like while scrolling through my feed:

Top: Express / Jeans: Nordstrom / Sandals: Target / Blazer: H&M (Similar) / Necklace: Chic Couture Online (Sold Out) / Sunglasses: Firmoo / Bracelet: Stella & Dot

Reason for dislike: "The jeans are too ripped."

Jacket: Nordstrom(Similar) / Necklace: Express / Jeans: Nordstrom / Tank: Target / Bracelet: Charlotte Russe / Shoes: Sole Society

Reason for dislike: Once again, the ripped jeans. The shoes were also too pointy for his liking and he said, "Please don't wear those when you come to my classroom."

Top: Express (Current) / Necklace: Express (Similar) / Shorts: Target (Current) / Bracelet: Rocksbox (Use coupon code onthedailyexpressxoxo for 50% off first month) or Here / Nails: Essie "Nothing Else Metals" / Sandals: Target

Reason for dislike: This one needed no words. He just gave me A Look and shook his head when he got to this. Pink Clothing. Cutoff jean shorts. Total #momfail.

Recap of my WORST #momstyle outfits:

The BEST:
For each of these, he didn't really have a reason for liking them other than the lack of offensive pieces like ripped jeans or pink!

Jacket: Express / Top: ExpressJeans: Express / Necklace: Stella & Dot / Shoes: Target

Jacket: Express / Tee: Old Navy / Jeans: Express / Shoes: NordstromNecklace: Stella & Dot
 Hat: Target
Top: Express / Jeans: Gap (Similar/Current) / Necklace: Express  (shortened)/ Shoes: Sole Society (SimilarNails: Essie Over the Edge

Recap of My BEST #momstyle Outfits:

It's nice to know that I have a few things to wear that meet his approval! I'm not about to give up wearing pink or pointy-toe shoes or distressed denim any time soon, but I'm sure I can avoid wearing them on days when I'm helping out at school. I'm all about compromise and I think this is an easy one to make.

  2. This is such a cute fun post. Love your son's honesty! I have to agree with your son's best looks but don't know if I agree with the worst looks because I love pink and I love ripped jeans. Well, I'm sure he knows he's got one stylish mama. ~Cynthia

  3. hahaha that is adorable! Kids always say the funniest things. I would be in a lot of trouble if my daughter told me she didn't want me to wear distressed denim..I think I only have one or two pairs that aren't distressed. LOL!

  10. I think that's always a fun exercise no matter who you ask - people always have a different view on outfits from ourselves. it can be really valuable, like it means you know things to avoid to avoid 'embarrassing' your son, but you can get some great outfit ideas from that too.

Thank you for the link up this week!

  16. This is so cute! What a fun post. I always like hearing a little more about you. Also, kids (especially boys when it comes to clothing) are too funny! I love that his main offenses are rips and pink. His dislikes are some of my favorite outfits! I am obsessed with that striped cami. If it weren't for my strapless bra dislike you better believe it would be in my closet!

  18. Little boys think so alike, my son does not like my ripped jeans either. Since cutting my hair short, I have stopped curling my hair and I curled it the other day and he tells me it's an ugly look. At least he was honest.

  20. It's hilarious the way children view adults isn't it! I'm dying laughing at the 'don't wear the pointy shoes to his classroom' what's wrong with the pointy shoes? And they're leopard print at that :) This was a fun post to read! You should let your son style you one day and see what he comes up with!

  21. Haha LOVE LOVE this post!!! Color pink is an easy guess for an 8 year old, ripped jeans is anyone's guess with kids I think :-) Totally rings a bell for me ( have a serious obsession with destroyed jeans) when I remember back what my now 10 year old girl thought about them a year ago ( totally cool) and now in 4th grade she is not that into them LOL. My two younger boy&girl love them though go figure. Of course you look perfectly causally styled in all of the lovely outfits. Kid approved or not. :-) Happy new week. XOXO, Elif

  22. Too cute and funny. But I have to agree with him. I don't like ripped jeans and pointy shoes either, although I do own a couple of pointy shoes. I love seeing fashion through a child's perspective. I love all your outfits….especially the pink ones!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am with your son on the ripped jeans one...I cannot handle them or handle seeing them..it just somehow bothers me..not sure why..but it does..LOL. Love the fact that he has such varied and vivid preferences!! Will make for a very dapper young man in few years..

  24. Omg your son is adorable haha! I don't find anything wrong with ripped jeans or pointy shoes. Two of my favorite details lol! I was laughing though, because you son sounds a lot like mine. I walked out of my room the other day with a pair of culottes on and he goes " ew mom you look so weird, like are you hiding something under there?" hhaha way to bring my confidence down lol! He is very picky on his own style though. Always in a button down with slip on shoes and his shoes always have to be a bright fun color. lol!

    Really enjoyed this mom post!!

  28. Love that you did this. So funny to see the perspective of an 8 year of an 8 year old boy. I adore the days I walk in to pick my son up and he tells me how pretty my outfit is....but it would be quite interesting to ask him what outfits he didn't like!

  29. Yup, boys have a lot of complaints when it comes to mom dressing. My boys used to complain that it embarrassed them when I went to fetch them in my Juicy Couture hoodie and bottom. They said it made me look like I'm wearing PJ at home. Yikes! I love that pair! And also, no hair up.. they call hair up look the angry mom look LOL! I hope their wives would not have problems later with them in the dressing department ;)

  33. Oh man! I'd be afraid to ask my son his opinions. He has told me flat out he didn't like some things I wore in the past and he now knows better. LOL! I have to laugh at the pointy toe flats (which I love yours, BTW). How funny about ripped jeans being a do or don't. I personally love them and as long as they aren't too distressed, I think they are great for women of all ages. And I am itching to buy that pink top or something in that shade after seeing it on you.

  34. This is tooo funny! I laughed so hard while reading this! I personally like all of your outfits, but I teach, so I understand what younger kids can think. Some of the comments they make on my outfit at times is hilarious! I love ripped/ distressed denim and basically live in my few pairs of it, so that is quite disappointing to hear! Such a great share and good read for Monday!

  36. This is such a cute post! Kids has such strong opinions that can be so funny. I love that he asked you not to wear those shoes to school. I wouldn't have thought that a boy would have such a strong opinion (compared with a girl), but that shows you how much I know about kids...
