Stacy London's Top Style Tips

|
Before blogs and Pinterest were around to tell me what to wear, I relied on Stacy and Clinton to tell me What Not to Wear. I watched the show regularly for many seasons and was excited to hear that Stacy was going to be back on TV with a new show this year: Love, Lust or Run on TLC.  Since Stacy's back in the spotlight I'm digging up some of her memorable outfits and fashion tips from over the years to dissect and discuss what I've learned from her.

1. Jacket Power

Stacy on Jackets:
"There is nothing like the power of a structured jacket. It can make anything look authoritative. It sculpts an outfit into looking deliberate." (Source)

"A black blazer adds the finishing touch to any outfit." (Source)

My outfit: Moto Jacket: Gap / White Tee: Old Navy / Necklace: Stella & Dot / Jeans: Express / Shoes: Sole Society

If there's one thing I remember from WNTW it was Stacy and Clinton repeatedly telling people to add a structured jacket to all of their outfits. This always stuck in my head and eventually they convinced me to add more jackets and blazers to my wardrobe. Now I understand their POV! A jacket makes even my basic white tee shirt and jeans outfit look so much more polished.

2. A Wardrobe of Utility + Joy

Stacy on Wardrobe Needs
:
"What you get from your wardrobe is really two-fold: there's utility and there's joy." (Source)

"There is a science to understanding and analyzing your body type to find clothes that are going to best flatter your figure, but that doesn't take away from the artistry of style. You should choose things that bring you joy, whether it comes from the color, embroidery, shoes, accessories, whatever it is." (Source)
My Outfit: Moto Jacket: Express / Tank: Target / Necklace: Stella & Dot / Jeans: Nordstrom / Shoes: Target

I loved Stacy's thoughts on this and while I certainly do take my lifestyle and body type into consideration with everything I buy, there are some things I own that I didn't need or that aren't the most practical. Like my white moto jacket. It's more about joy than function. It makes me look forward to getting dressed, it brightens my day to wear it, and that's worth being a little impractical for me.

3. Make a List

Stacy on Shopping:
"Decide what you need to create a cohesive closet and only shop for the items you need. Set a budget and limit the amount of stores. Don't make shopping the overwhelming experience that it can be." (Source)

This is almost exactly what I outlined for myself in my Shopping Smarter resolution without having read this tip before that post. So excuse me while I take a moment to pat myself on the back here!

4. Let's Agree to Disagree

Stacy on Wearing Black Over 35
"Over 35, black for day makes your skin look older. Try chocolate brown pants over black, or charcoal gray paired with jewel tones. You can't go wrong with neutrals, but you want to complement them with color or print." (Source)
My Outfit: Cardigan: Express / Cami: Express / Black Skinnies: Express / Booties: Target / Necklace: CCO

Well. Hmph. Stacy (currently age 45) doesn't even take her own advice on this one so she can't expect me to either, can she? I wear what makes me feel best regardless of my age. Sometimes it's a lot of black, sometimes not, but I let my mood and personal preference dictate that more than my age. I don't have Stacy's fashion credentials by any means but I do have some stylish-over-35 stars who seem to be on my side with this one:

* * *
Even if I haven't agreed with Stacy 100% of the time, she's still a fashion icon in my book and has provided me with lots of ideas and style inspiration over the years!

And just two more quick things before you go!

1) My sweet friend Noelle was kind enough to include me in her post today so check it out over here

2) If you haven't entered the $750 Amazon giveaway head on over here

  3. I'm so excited Stacy is back with a new show too! I loved this recap on her styling tips! I agree with you on the all black - I think you can wear it no matter what you age.

  4. I need to put her show on my dvr so that I can watch it, her style can sometimes be a little too much for me (like the midi skirt and the printed top and jacket) but I love a lot of her outfits. My only issue with her was that strand of grey or blond hair I'm not sure what color it is but I always hated it. I wonder how she feels about it now ummm... Actually I think that black does age people a bit but I love it's still very sophisticated. The ladies with the lighter hair pulls it off even better.

    1. I caught an episode of the show last night (which was cute, BTW) and she still has the grey streak. :) Also, one of the articles I read in preparing this post said that it's even in her contract with Pantene that she won't be asked/required to change it because she absolutely won't. So it sounds like it's just her signature thing and not going anywhere.

  5. I love Stacey and can't wait to see the new show. She knows her stuff. I agree with you about the black. Maybe she was talking to those women who wear nothing but black all of the time because they think it's slimming. She can't possibly be talking about the way you wear it.

  7. I'm glad you reminded me of her new show. I just love Stace (and Clinton). I can't believe she said that about black. Hmm. I also read somewhere that she and Clinton always said "no tapered pants" but now that skinnies are in, she said that some of her rules don't always hold up over time and with changing fashion. I do agree on having a few impractical pieces that you love in your wardrobe. I probably have more than a few pieces though :-) And there are those orchid pants. Yay!

  8. I loveeee Stacy and Clinton! I actually got to meet Clinton at a local Macy's event and I have his autograph framed in my closet room :) And I love that she is 45 and fabulous as ever. Though I am with you and side eye her a bit for the black comment- but I still love her! And I'm totally a jacket convert!

  9. I love Stacy London!! I used to watch that show all the time and then rewatch it again on Netflix! haha! I was a little obsessed. I'm going to have to agree with you about the black pants though...I would be in a lot of trouble if I had to give up black. I swear I wear it all the time! haha

  10. Ah, I love Stacy and Clinton!!! I'm still sad WNTW is over and I still watch re-runs all the time, lol!! Interesting though, I didn't know about this "no black after 35" rule...well, I think that one is worth breaking, haha! Also, I completely understand the structured jacket concept and am working on building my collection further. I still love your white moto jacket!!

  12. Black clothing make you appear older? I never felt that way and never thought that way either...very interesting. I really like the blazer with the short looks and I have to try that look one day. I also like the shopping list with tips.

  13. I've never heard anyone say not to wear black over a certain age before. It seems that's what a lot of older women do wear the most of because they think they look thinner in black. I agree with her on structured jackets, but I always find them so uncomfortable and impractical to wear except in the spring or fall. They are too uncomfortable to wear under winter coats. I am looking forward to her new show though!

  17. thats hilarious she doesnt even take her own advice about the black - though i reckon most everyone can wear all black and still look fabulous, 25 or 55. i never had cable (was it on cable?) so i didnt watch the show regularly but i have seen a few episodes and love it. i agree with the structured jacket - i do think it makes an outfit look better and more polished, though i am not a fan for myself.. no joy is taken from structured jackets haha.

  18. You and me both! I love her! I watched the show religiously, and even though I'll miss Clinton Kelly and his cute self, I need to watch her new show (or at least DVR it). I think a lot of my "rules" about style come from her. I think dressing for your body is so important, although it can feel restrictive at times. But so much of what she claims is true. Great post!

  24. I love the shopping list idea, I was just thinking of doing just that last night after my studded heel debacle. My shoe game needs a bit of spice and I have a few types of shoes in mind to add to the collection! I'm with you on the black, all black will forever be sexy and great at any time of the day no matter what age you are!

  27. I remember watching the show, but at the time, I never really liked the befores or afters LOL...it was a fun concept but I don't think I shared the same style aesthetic as Stacy or Clinton.

But I do agree with the black clothes thing...not for everybody - but for some reason, I don't like wearing black clothes anymore - maybe because I already have such dark hair? I think it looks amazing on others (especially blondes wearing black clothes - Charlize & Reese), but I prefer cream or white on myself - I think it adds a glow and is more youthful looking ;-P

    1. Yeah, I usually liked the afters but I always felt they dressed everyone the same, in "Stacy/Clinton" style and not much of the person's original style. I can also see how a person's coloring and hair color can make black more harsh or not as flattering. You do look amazing in white!

  33. I love Stacy and her fashion tips - especially adding a structured jacket to every look. As I'm getting older and attending more professional events, I find myself just throwing a blazer over basically any look and it really ties everything together. By the way, I followed you on bloglovin! It would be wonderful if you could take a minute to check out my blog!

  34. Stacy is such an icon! I loved the one episode of her and Clinton where they were trying to tame a rather heady arrogant and bitchy lawyer, boy, that was something, always enjoy their style ideas. As for black after 35, I dont get it, why should anything be banned for any age? If the person wearing it knows it looks go od on them, then they should wear it irrespective of age...
