Lifeless Outfits: Chambray Edition

|
I started testing out "lifeless outfits" (just clothes laid out, no person wearing them) from Pinterest and Polyvore back in October, repeated it in January, and for the third installment today I'm officially calling it a series. I like finding out whether these sets work as well in 3-D as they do in 2-D. This time I focused on outfits with one specific item that most people already own: the chambray shirt.

1. The Office

This has been my second most-repinned item on Pinterest lately (most popular is this), and it's the set that inspired this post. While I thought the look came together well in real life, I have to say it was really uncomfortable for me to have a chambray shirt under a fitted blazer. I could barely move my arms to take the picture! To wear it in real life I'd have to change the fit or fabric of one of these elements.

2. Polished Casual

I don't have a chunky knit grey scarf like the one pictured (or a nice YSL satchel for that matter) in this pin, and I think some accessories would have helped my version. It's a nice, classic outfit base, but I would need a little more visual interest to wear this in real life.

3. Very Casual- White Converse vs. Black Converse

The base of the next two outfits are almost identical: Chambray (subbed in for a denim jacket in the first look), White Tee, Black Skinnies, and Converse. Once again I liked both of these outfits more in 2D than 3D. Nothing horribly wrong, but just not quite me.

4. The Basic B.

I'm not even kidding when I say that if you do a Google Image Search for Basic Bitch, this outfit will come up in one or two variations. (Go ahead...try it!) Luckily I have no shame in my basic game. I've shared my version of this pin in the past, but I wanted to re-feature today since it's on topic. Plus I've recently spotted my friends Carylee and Skye rocking The Basic B!  I think this look is here to stay and hopefully it will outlast the stereotype!

And by the way, all three of us are wearing the same J Crew Factory shirt above. Carylee convinced each of us to get it and now it's a wardrobe staple.

* * *

For this round of lifeless outfits I didn't feel like any of the new combinations were quite the right combination for me. Hopefully next month I'll have the luck of the Irish with my choices!

  1. Ahaha! Love the results googling basic bitch! I certainly felt basic wearing it, but you know, there's a reason why it's popular! :) And I still get satisfaction knowing you're happy with this chambray! <3

  3. Yes, Carylee convinced me to get that Chambray too! Lol!! You know what I realized going through your outfits today - I never wear my chambray open (hm, something to try). I liked the building blocks of the converse outfit, but maybe an added vest or scarf would top it off. I might try the blazer look...the black blazer I have is jersey material, so that may make a difference in the restriction you ran into. Fun post even though you felt you struck out - gotta love the chambray!!

  4. Sometimes when I'm trying to pair new outfits in my closet I find something I really like laid out but when I try it on it just isn't right, I hate that!! lol!

  5. I'm totally a Basic Bitch then because I would totally wear that and I need a new chambray shirt so badly, one is too big, one is too small and the other is not dark enough. First world problems right!

  6. Love all the different ways to wear a chambray! Such a versatile piece! Can you believe I don't own one? I am ashamed to admit it. I find it hard to find one that isn't too stiff with the right fit. I have broad shoulders and don't always like the way button ups look on me. I had a soft one I loved from Target, but I wore it out. Who knew I was going to ramble about chambray for so long in this comment....

  7. I love the look with the chambray under the black blazer and the last one with the brown boots! I agree that the middle two need something else to make them more interesting. Such a great series!

  8. you're making me want another chambray shirt. seriously, i have had like 3, and gotten rid of all of them. i just don't think they are me, they make me feel awkward and like i can't move my arms - they either don't do up properly, are too short, or are too big. seriously. can't win. i also just feel like they aren't super my style, but you look at any capsule wardrobe, basic essentials list, packing list.. and it's there. sigh. i do have a denim jacket but it's a bit bulky.

  9. ok j crew is having 30% off. maybe i should buy it - i've only had cheaper ones before, and yours is super cute and i love the colour. i should buy it, yes?

    1. If you're not sure it's your style....I'm on the fence about needing to order it! I know a lot of "Wardrobe Staple lists" have it (and I just called it a staple in my post, LOL!) but staples are different for everyone! On the other hand if you like any of these outfits and could see yourself wearing them, then yes! Get it!

  14. This is a great way of testing whether these flat lay looks really work well or not in real life - and they do! You really suit the number three's 'very casual' look as well! :)

  16. Oh, the good old chambray. It really does go with everything. I like the polished casual. Sometimes simple is good. It looks classic. That's hilarious about the basic bitch. I've worn a variation of this many times.

  17. The Basic Bitch is my favorite out of all of them. It's making me want to get that denim shirt now. This is such a great post. I often see the pictures on Pinterest or Instagram where the outfit is laid out and it just doesn't look as good on. I also cannot stand to have a long sleeve button up shirt as the first in a layering piece. It looks good on other people, I just cannot stand the restrictive feeling.

  18. Haha, I'll have to send you a video about the basic bitch. I don't know what it is, but I find the whole thing hilarious! Love being one lol. I just wore that exact look fri for work, so I guess I'm part of the club. I'll have to blog it soon :)

  22. This is a great little series! I pin these types of outfits all the time! Chambray outfits are the best too. I've had mine for about 8 months now and I absolutely love it. I wish it was an inch or two longer but otherwise, it's worn so much! I'm definitely a bigger fan of the white converse. I'm sure those outfits would work with lightweight scarves or a longer necklace to add some visual interest.

  24. I laughed so hard at the Basic B one! Seriously, the no shame in the basic game was great! I love chambray put find it hard to pair under so many items! I have the exact same one from J.Crew Factory. I found one recently that was a chambray style but a cotton fabric and have been pairing that under things! I found it at Ann Taylor and Loft, in case you want something for layering. I really love the one worn open with the converse!

  25. Hmm, basic bitch eh? I sure didn't feel like it was basic. To me, throwing on a pair of high heeled cognac boots (nothing basic about that), then adding some skinny black jeans...nothing basic about a hot pair of black skinny jeans, and then adding some leopard giving me an animalistic personality booster to be able to get out of my comfort zone to wear this outfit out...yup, I felt anything but basic. It was definitely comfy and it them people are coining comfy and the new basic "bitch"...then heck, I'm all over this BB. Also, I love that ALL 3 us of had the same stuff to pull it together. Thanks Carylee!!! Oh and I need to try it open. I really enjoyed this post!!!!!!!!!

  39. Loving all these Chambray shirt inspiration outfits - thanks :-) And yes - button shirts rolled up into blazer sleeves look really cute BUT don't seem that practical...blazer material is usually thick and hard to roll-up!

OMG - I've totally worn the basic B outfit too ;-) I'll be laughing the next time I wear it - who knew I could be so basic LOL!
