All the Single Ladies

|
I've had a post topic weighing on my mind for a bit that I wanted to get out, but finding a positive way to share it has been something of a challenge.  I like my content to be fun, light and fluffy because this is a blog about shopping and fashion after all...it's not that serious. But here's what it comes down to: the holidays are not the most wonderful time of year for a lot of people, no matter what that song says. One of my nearest and dearest real life friends became a widow this year through a very tragic accident. She's suddenly single, raising three kids on her own with more strength and determination than I have on my best day. When I try to see the world through her eyes, I notice that this season in particular we are bombarded with images everywhere of cheerful, smiling families apparently enjoying every second of their magical lives. In her words, she doesn't have that luxury anymore. I can't change the things I wish I could to make that right for her, and I can't spin that in a more positive way because it just sucks.

So today, in a simple way I really just want to salute some strong, single ladies who inspire me. Whether it's for their work and accomplishments or their fabulous personal style, cheers to the single ladies this season! You're in good company with some of these never-married, inspiring-in-their-own way women:

Cameron Diaz:

"My dad always used to tell me that if they challenge you to an after-school fight, tell them you won't wait-you can kick their ass right now."

"I think that anything that you do, any accomplishment that you make, you have to work for. And I've worked very hard in the last ten years of my life, definitely, and I can tell you that hard work pays off. It's not just a cliché."

I love Cameron's style and have posted about it here and here, and while browsing her outfits I found a couple of options I could re-create from my own closet:

Outfit Details: Black Tee: Express / White Jeans: Express / Bracelet: Express / Shoes: Sole Society
(Dear Sole Society, if you ever read this, please make these in more colors. Starting with nude. Thanks!)

Outfit Details: London Sweater: Express (Light Sand) / White Tank: Target / Bracelet: Express / Jeans: Express / Boots: Target

Kylie Minogue:

Kylie Quotables (Source):
"I'm a very proud Australian, always bragging about our country wherever I am in the world."

"Having had cancer, one important thing to know is you're still the same person at the end. You're stripped down to near zero. But most people come out the other end feeling more like themselves than ever before."

Oprah Winfrey:

Oprah Quotables (Source):
"Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down." Oprah Winfrey

"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough."

  1. Cameron Diaz is definitely one of my faves as well. She is casually chic and slightly edgy which I love. You nailed her looks. Andy you know, for a woman of certain age, Oprah always looks DIVINE!!

  2. So sorry to hear about your friend. I've always admired single moms and always will. Their inner strength is truly amazing. Love love the black and white outfit. I'm embarrassed to say I'm guilty of saying a lot of those things on the list to my single friends. Hope they can forgive me! Have a great week, Gina! ~Cynthia

  4. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I couldn't even imagine being in her shoes. Being a mom with a partner is challenging enough but hearing about events like this make me appreciate all that I have. I have a few single friends and you have inspired me to reach out to them this time of year. I've seen those Christmas cards by Bridget and they are hilarious! And Cameron is a good fashion inspiration. Now if I could only have her long legs!

  5. So sorry to hear about the terrible loss for your friends. I can only imagine how hard it must be for her to cope with this sudden and tragic loss during this festive season. May peace be with her husband and may there be a world for her where she finds the courage in her heart, mind and soul to be the pillar of strength for her kids.. I am just too overwhelmed just writing this..I feel terribly sorry for her...
Thanks for the inspiration of all these strong women...

  6. Oh, my heart breaks for anyone going through this season with a loss heavy on their hearts...how tragic! However, what a nice reminder to her, and any other single lady, that you do have the power to be strong! I watched my Mom raise both of us after divorce...women can be strong than they ever imagine! I send my best to your friend! On a fashion note...too funny were talking Cameron together! She's got great fashion for sure!

  8. I know what you mean about the holidays and it's actually one of my least favorite season because everyone wants to remind you to be happy. Anywho I'm sending love and "prayers" to your friend, I can imagine how hard this season must be for her. But with friends like you she will make it through, and one thing I've learn in my 29 years is that nothing last forever even bad time. Diaz is one of my favorite single gal and Oprah I wish i was her she's a mastermind.

    1. I'm glad you understand my POV. :) It's not that I want people to not enjoy the holidays, but you know, if someone is sad maybe they have a good reason and who am to tell them they have to be happy just because it's December?

  9. My heart sank reading your friends story. You just never realize how your life could change in an instant and that thought is so scary. My prayers and thoughts to your friend during this holiday season. I hope she will find the peace in her heart.
On a lighter note, I LOVED that buzz feed list! I have a few single friends and I am sure I am guilty of saying a few of these things to them...eek!! I think people just don't know what to say to others sometimes so those lines are the best they could come up with.
I love your choices for these strong single woman! Esp. Kylie. She's been through cancer and came out the other end alive and with a beautiful smile on her face!
    Great post! xo

  11. I am so sorry for your friend's loss. This happened to a friend of mine back home, an eerily similar thing, cyclist was hit by a semi, leaving his wife and children suddenly alone, a couple of years ago now. it's horrible that things like this have to happen for you to realise how good you have it or how lucky you are, and how that could change in an instant. your friend sounds amazing and strong, and my thoughts are with her during the holiday season.
meanwhile... yay for using an Aussie in your post. Kylie's the shit.

  12. Thanks for bringing this up Gina. I am so very sorry for your friend. I cannot even imagine. Holidays are hard. So many who are grieving and it just amplifies the loss. I have an amazing life and even find them hard simply because of all the business. You're amazing!

  15. I was actually just working on a post in my Style Icon series featuring Cameron Diaz. LOL! Great minds think alike! ;-) Her style is so classy and comfortable. I love it. Also, I am so very sorry to hear about your friend. I couldn't even imagine... My heart goes out to her and her family <3

  16. I'm so sorry about your friend loss. I can't imagine what she is going through right now. It teaches us not to take our love ones for granted, because life can change in a blink. I love Cameron, I met her once in NY, and I couldn't believe how gorgeous she is. She is a strong women who enjoys her life the way it comes, and she has an amazing style indeed. It's definitely no easy to walk in anyone's shoes.

  17. I really like this tribute you did for her, and I know it's not just her, but yeah. I can't even fathom what she went through/is feeling, but my thoughts go out to her and I too admire her strength.
I just watched The Other Woman last night with Cameron, so this was even more relevant for me to read this morning seeing her face in this post. She really does rock. I mean, she dated Justin, so. But her style and her personality are both awesome. I could so be her BFF.
And - I also just must say - I really enjoy your content day after day. I know you say it's not meant to be serious, but you do really put a brain in us fashion bloggers and you find a way to make it fun but keep it from being superficial and meaningless.
And why am I crying writing this!!? There's no crying in baseball!!!

    1. Oh you :) Thank you <3 I'm glad you still enjoy my stuff. Believe me,this was a teary post for me to write and I debated a million times about posting it because I don't want it to be condescending to single women or preachy to married/relationship women but ultimately it's how I feel so I just did it. It's great to be happy and appreciate life, but people have valid reasons to be sad, too, no matter if it's December.

  18. I'm so sorry for your friend, and her lost. I have been single for a long time, and that buzz article hit a lot of point for single no kids ladies, but for single mothers, the number one thing I hate hearing over and over again from couples that have kids is..."I don't know how you do it". Please don't say that to her, she doing it because she has to, just like I do it because I have to.

Everyone has that strength when they become a parent, and the fact that she has love from her family, friends, and her kids, is how she is able to "do it". Hugs and kisses to your friend!

And you so right...there are just so many times we do things because we have to and we don't know our strength until we HAVE to know it.

  22. This is an amazing and powerful post Gina. I loved that you shared those strong women in many different ways. We should be able to pour our hearts out here once in a while, it keeps everything real and lifelike. We all smile in our fashionable pics but it is a fact that life throws curveballs to us all sometime or the next. So sorry about your friends, I feel for her so much. It is comforting to know she has someone like you to support her through these really difficult times. Hugs and kisses to you both! XOXO, Elif
