How Old is Too Old

|
Tracy recently asked me if I've ever had anyone ask me if they were "too old" to shop at Express. She had recently shared her experience with customer service there as a 40-something in her post here. But actually no, no one has asked me about that. I really hadn't even thought about an age limit for shopping there. I think of it more as a matter of personal style preference and budget. But the question got my wheels turning and I decided to address the topic of "how old is too old to shop at Express?"

At first I started compiling a list of super stylish ladies from 40-50. That was an easy task and the list is long, but for just a few "fabulous fashion over 40" inspirations here are some that I like:
Stylish Celebrities over 40, Cameron Diaz, Stacy London, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox
Cameron Diaz (42) / Stacy London (45) / Jennifer Aniston (45) / Courteney Cox (50)

Then I set out to find someone super stylish who is well beyond 40 and who also wears pieces that are similar to what Express offers. I zeroed in on Christie Brinkley, age 60. She has really classic style and it was easy to re-create similar outfits using mostly pieces from Express:
Christie Brinkley Dressed Up style

Trench: Express / Black Dress:  Express /  Winged Satchel: Express / Pumps: Express

Christie Brinkley Style

Blue Essential Shirt: Express /  Broken in Khakis: Gap / Sandals: Target / Handbag: Express

But hey, why stop at 60?  Let's just max this out with the oldest, sassiest female celebrity I can think of: Betty White, age 92. I shopped my own closet to re-create a couple of Betty's looks using a lot of my pieces from Express:

ONE: Portofino Shirt Express (in Tile Blue:)/ Scarf: Express (Similar, Similar) / Black Skinnies: Express / Bracelet: Nordstrom / Shoes: TJ Maxx (old) (Option)

TWO: Barcelona Cami: Express / Teal Blazer: Piperlime (in black, Similar in teal) / Black Skinnies: Express / Bracelet: Nordstrom / Necklace: Express / Shoes: TJ Maxx (old) (Option)

I also came across a couple of Betty's outfits that reminded me of things that Carylee owns but I don't. Over the weekend, I asked her to snap a couple of outfit selfies for me. I gave her the following outfit details:

1. Zebra Portofino, black pants, turquoise necklace, black heels please
2. Floral blazer, white Portofino, black pants

But I didn't give her the "inspiration" pics. She was a great sport and played along, so I hope she doesn't mind the creative liberties I'm taking here!

ONE: Zebra Portofino: Express (Similar) / Black Skinnies: Express / Necklace: Boutique (Similar) / Bracelet: Express / Heels: Zara (Similar)

TWO: White Portofino: Express / Floral Blazer: Eshakti (Similar) / Black Skinnies: Express /  Bracelet: Express / Shoes: MICHAEL Michael Kors (Similar)

* * *

So this is how I see it: Betty White is 92 and could easily wear pieces from Express if she wanted to. That gives a 42 year old roughly 50 years before they need to re-evaluate their age and whether they are "too old" to shop there. I personally don't plan to change my shopping habits just because I get to a certain age. My tastes may change over time and I might have to re-brand the blog to On the Daily Coldwater Creek or something (too bad they went out of business), but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

And see! I told you that zebra portofino made me feel like a golden girl!
    Haha!!
But I am totally with you. I have been shopping at express for as long as I have been shopping. Period. I do think it's about style and preference and budget. As long as they keep making things I like, I will keep shopping there regardless of my age!
    Awesome reconnaissance as always!

  3. Hahaa On the Daily Cold Water Creek lmao! I seriously love your humor! My mom shops at Express religiously, possibly more then I do. She gets a lot of her work clothes there and she is in her late 50's. I definitely think it comes down to personal style! I absolutely love the Betty White inspo pics the women may be old but she can rock a blazer like no other! Carylee is too cute! Love her outfits!

Hope you had a great weekend love!

  4. I can't tell you how much this post makes my day! I am 50 and I always feel a little awkward shopping at Express even though I love their stuff. I don't feel I look like I'm 50, but I felt like Tracy did in her post, just a little paranoid, haha! Thank you so much for representing my age group in a cool way and now I'm obsessed with Christie Brinkley's style. Have a great day!!! xo

  5. I completely agree with you, I don't think there is any age limit to Express. I think Express is full of trendy classy wear and also has a lot of the basics too, so there's a little something for everyone. And OMG do I LOVE Stacy London's style. haha! Every time I see an episode of What Not to Wear I want her outfit. haha. Your Betty White inspiration outfits are perfect. Love them, and her!

  6. This is awesome. The Betty White part just nails it! :)
I get asked this all the time about F21. I say no, but you do have to know what works for you and stick to basics when shopping there after a certain age. You find a trendy bit of edge too but again it is a fine line.

  7. I love this! Sometimes I ask myself if what I am wearing is age appropriate and if I'm too old to wear something! There are some pieces at Express that I think are more youthful than others but that store has something for everyone! You are so right, even Betty White could shop there!

  9. Totally agree, there's items at Express that I never even try on but a lot of it fit my personal style. I took my mom and she really liked a top there but her size was sold out and she is 61. My dad is 62 and I always take him to Express when he's visiting too. I love Betty she is so cute and feisty and have a great sense of style.

  10. Such great points here-I think this goes not only for Express but for so many stores that are supposed to be or at least many people think they "geared" to a younger audience, like Forever 21, AEO, etc. I've never had any issues shopping at any of these places but I do know people who think its not "appropriate" for people even over 30 or moms to shop at these store-so ridiculous & judgemental! I say shop wherever you like & wear what you feel good in. I really appreciate this post & love the Betty White reference too, so cute!

  13. Ok - you're in trouble for making me choke with laughter when I scrolled down and saw the Betty White outfit recreations LOL!

Who's your favourite Golden Girl - mine is Blance then Rose - although I love all 4 :-)

And seriously - Christie Brinkley - flawless everything!

  14. This post is so cute and hit home for me as well. I think as long as you look good in the clothes you wear (no matter where you buy it) you are fine. I think for the most part, we start to dress appropriately as we age anyway.

  15. Great post! Personally I think dressing for your age has more to do with fit and how something is styled than the actual piece. It's amazing how ageless pieces like the portfino really are. Hope you had a great weekend!

  17. you win all the awards for putting Betty White on your blog. Lol!
I love this post, but honestly, and forgive me for my words because I'm not a good writer, but sometimes I shop at the same stores I shopped at when I was a teenager, and other times I shop at stores that I used to deem old. My style has changed, definitely, and I don't wear short skirts and dresses anymore, but it's all about picking different, more 'classic' pieces that can grow with you, does that make sense? Also as I got older I realised just because it zips doesn't mean it fits, lol. Anyway that was rambly and in no way sense making ;) happy monday!

    1. Thank you, thank you for all the awards! :) And you're so silly with "I'm not a good writer." Um, have you read your blog?? But yes, I get where you're coming from! I think we all have a style evolution and sometimes that means we stop shopping at a certain place and other times we stay at the same place but make different choices!

  18. I agree that where you shop is more based off personal style and budget! There are some stores I consider more "old" or "young" but that is just based off of the type of clothes they sell and whether I would have worn that in middle school, now, or in twenty years!

  19. This post made me so happy! Love Betty White and Golden Girls, and of course the outfits you re-created! My style has definitely changed as I've gotten older, but I can still find something I like in pretty much any store;)

  20. There is never too old for express, and these women look amazing no matter the age. It's funny that when I was in my early twenties I felt too young to shop at express, but it was mostly because it didn't fit my budget and I preferred F21 :) Nowadays, my styled has evolved and I prefer to shop wisely. Express is always a great option. Great post Gina!

  23. Hahaha dying at "on the daily coldwater creek"! I think once you get out of the juniors dept, basically any store is free game for women off all ages. There are certainly pieces at Express I won't be wearing in my 50's (sequin body con dresses, maybe not...?) but there are plenty of gorgeous staples for all ages.

Love your interpretation of hers..but I have to say..I sometimes have a hard time at Express, even though I used to be a Express devotee before..I can never seem to find too many options for corporate office appropriate stuff.. :(. I might need Express shopping tips from ya!

    1. Aw, you know, I think it's A-okay if it's just not your store! It just might not be to your style or liking and that's totally fine! But it's definitely not because you are TOO OLD for it. Tastes changes. :) However, if you were to go back in, I could definitely see you wearing their Editor pants, Essential Shirts, Blazers, and Silky V Neck tees (to go under blazers or just on their own with Editor pants or pencil skirts).

  37. I think it is funny that our society is so focused on numbers all the time that we even think about where we shop because we might be too old or too young to shop somewhere! I mean, my 62 year old mother can still buy things from forever 21... crop tops and short skater skirts? NO. But they have an assortment of blouses and cardigans, etc. that I know she loves. I also have found some REALLY cute things at Christopher & Banks even though I was there shopping for my mom! I tend to stick by the rule (especially in fashion and shopping) that NOTHING is off limits as long as it fits you and makes you feel fabulous! So long story short, I believe everyone, no matter the age, should be able to shop and wear things from Express!

  41. THANK YOU for posting this! I'm 51 and I shop at Express. Too old to shop at Express? How ridiculous! First of all, even though they have some younger pieces, especially in their casual wear department, I don't consider them a young person's store. I love that they have a career/dressier clothes department, since most stores don't. Why does everyone always think they have to start shopping at Chico's the second they turn 40? I so tire of it. I love what you did with the Betty White images. So true!

    1. LOVE your comments Amy! Yes, they do have some really trendy and clubwear type stuff, but the classics are great for any age. I agree, I hate the whole notion that you need to change your shopping habits just because of your age.

  42. I actually work at Express and in our store some of our most loyal customers are actually over 40. There is everything in that store for any age. I love when women over 40 come shop, they love our studio clothing which are the dressier/career oriented clothes like the Portofinos, pencil skirts, columnists and editors as well as our casual section like denim. I really think Express is perfect for any age just as long as you enjoy fashion.
