The Top Ten Trends: Part One

|
Last week I got an email from Piperlime informing me of the top ten trends that I need in my closet NOW. (You can see their options for each trend category HERE.) I am always amused by these lists since I think we all have such different lifestyles and tastes that one list cannot fit all. But I indulged them and read through their list of suggested needs to see where I stand on each trend and how my favorite retailer (that would be Express if you haven't noticed) stacks up in comparison.

Trend #1: Ankle Length Denim

I am all for showcasing shoes with the ankle jeans trend! I shudder when I think back to how ugly some of my shoes were before skinny jeans took over, but I guess it didn't matter that much because the pants mostly hid them.

In my Outfit Post last week I showed a few of my current favorite ankle jeans from Express:

If you haven't heard, all jeans are 40% off at Express right now! (And there's a coupon code through today which makes prices even lower than Black Friday's 50% off...just sayin'.) Click through below to see some of the ankle jeans options at Express right now:

Normally I fail at anything DIY, but DIY ankle jeans are one thing I can manage. I found a great visual for this, and you can check out the entire post on the subject on Advice from a Twenty-Something.

Trend #2: The Fashion Sneaker

Sources: Left, Middle, Right

While my feet are on board with the comfort factor of this trend, I think it takes a certain je ne sais quoi to pull it off the way these ladies do. And I don't have the quoi. Sneakers are function over form for me, so I wear them only when I have to because I'm going to be a doing lots of walking in a given day. I'll give myself one-half point on following this trend since I'm not really doing it in the name of fashion, and here's how I wore sneakers recently when I was heading out for a walk in a (Minus the) Leather Moto Jacket:

I'll be honest: I can't say Express is my first stop for shoe shopping. But what they do have is usually on-trend, including their Canvas Sneaker.

Trend #3: Spring Knits

Knits are a trend? I've never really thought of them that way, I just think of them as a fabric choice. Technically we're not even halfway through winter, but I'm sure I'll be wearing knits sometime between now and summer!

As for Express, they'll probably always carry knits like some of these options:

Trend #4: Mirrored Sunglasses

When you think about it, mirrored sunglasses are really a nice public service trend. Anyone who's talking to you can check themselves out and see if they have a stray hair or some spinach stuck in their teeth. I haven't been thoughtful enough to purchase a pair of these, but one point to Express for being on top of this trend.

Trend #5: Spring Bootie

Ankle booties, taupe booties, how to wear, spring 2014 ankle bootie trend

What's not to like about this trend? Taupe goes with just about everything, so it seems like an easy enough trend to incorporate into a wardrobe. The real question I have is what do you wear with your booties when you're wearing a skirt? Do you go barefoot or do you wear some kind of socks?

It's been unseasonably warm for me lately so I haven't been reaching for booties, but Express definitely has options for taupe booties, including the new ankle strap version that we first previewed back in December thanks to Ella Pretty Blog:

How did you do on Part One of Piperlime's Top 10 Trends to have right now? I gave myself a 3.5 out of 5, while Express scored 5 out of 5. On Wednesday I'll cover the second half of the trends and hand out the final scores.

  1. Ahhh! I'm 4 out of 5. I need some mirrored sunnies, clearly. And I laughed bc I've totally looked at myself in the husbands glasses!! I can't believe how much I love summer booties considering I used to think I would never ever do booties and bare legs. Never say never!!

    1. "Never say never!" SO TRUE. Just because I don't have some of these things now doesn't mean I won't! LOL. I also thought I'd never wear skinny jeans! HA!

    2. Really?! Wow! I remember buying and wearing my first pair of skinny jeans! I felt so fashion forward. Hahaha

    3. I felt fashion forward when I started wearing them too, but I was probably a year later than you. :) I just didn't think the trend would last since it's unflattering on so many, but boy was I wrong about that!

    1. Hahaha! That is really funny because I almost didn't add my own picture since I don't really love myself in sneakers. But all in the name of blog....

  5. I've been loving ankle jeans lately and actually just picked up a great pair at Express during their sale. You can also score amazing deals on Express jeans by visiting their outlets.

The spring knits are cute too, but I just can't get into booties and I don't know why :-P

    1. I take my fashion cafeteria style, too. There are so many trends...if I'm not feeling one I just don't bother!

  6. I'm about a 3.5 too. I don't have the mirrored glasses (but I have been coveting) and to get ankle pants, I usually have to roll them since I'm 5'4" and right on the edge of regular sizes and petite. I can't wait to see the next 5.

    1. I'm 5'4" also and run into the same problem. I'm right on the border of regular and petite. Petite is usually cut too short in the torso for me, so I have to go to regular sizing, which is too long in the legs! Luckily the ankle jeans trend is saving me a lot of money on alterations because when pants are too long I just cuff or roll them!

  7. I'm so obsessed with that sneaker trend, but I can't seem to pull it off myself. It's so much more sensible for comfort, but I haven't been able to convince myself to buy a pair yet since I think the dress+sneaker deal will be out of fashion soon.

    Sincerely,
    Sabrina

    1. Yeah, I don't know if I see dresses + sneakers really sticking around but I do think jeans + sneakers are a good one that will stay awhile! (At least I hope!)

  9. Hey there! You are too funny! :) Knits are a trend! White shirts are a trend! Blue Jeans are a trend! Well, I'll be darned...guess I've been ahead of the curve (or behind) for all these years. :) I also really admire the DIY bloggers, but I don't have the time or patience, although occasionally I will wash and iron my work clothes instead of dry-cleaning them...lol. I think you look really good in the dressy sneaker look...I think it works better on tall, thin people....I've yet to see it look good on a petite curvy girl, but I would love to see it! Take care!
